Hello, my name is Darren Wong. I graduated from the University of British Columbia (UBC) with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry in 2015, and I am currently a first year Bachelor of Computer Science (BCS) student of UBC. The 20-month intense and challenging BCS program is designed to prepare university graduates like myself to combine my area of interest with computer science, or even make a career transition if I choose to. With information technology being one of the most rapidly growing industries, more and more professions are looking for individuals who possess talents in more than one field.
In addition to taking the required computer science courses, I have and will continue to take a few business and commerce courses (economics, business processes and operations, international finance) as bridging modules. Through these courses, bridges are built to other academic disciplines and they enable me to explore connections between various industries and computer science. I just finished two academic semesters in the BCS program, and so far the curriculum has introduced me with new ways of thinking, creating, and communicating.
I am currently in the Computer Science Co-op program and I have been going through job postings and starting to apply for jobs. My short term goal is to obtain an internship in a local tech company where I can learn and sharpen my software development skills, as well as build a network of professional contacts in the field. Once I graduate in 2018, I aspire to work for a well-established technological company such as Google, Amazon, Microsoft, and Intel, etc. I envisage that a career in software development will provide me with unparalleled opportunities for advancement and self development.
