As the roar of the undergraduate presence diminishes, a different kind of researcher comes our way – the MBA intern, the visiting student, the Sauder PhD student working on a summer project, or the researcher from across campus. What these diverse clients share is a need for in-depth and often complex consultation, sometimes in applied areas and often requiring unusual numeric data. The number of individual reference questions falls, but the consultations require exceptional attention and expertise, and challenge us in new ways.

The often quieter pace of summer allows us to to think creatively about how we do things – support our users, prepare in-class instruction, and translate the complex world of information resources into something understandable. We also try to accomplish a few large projects each summer. This summer we are evaluating all of our corporate financial databases, analyzing where overlaps and gaps exist. We’re revamping our Research Guides – the online guides we create on topics or assignments for our students. We are also going to implement a new knowledge management product, which will allow our users to ask questions of an intelligent FAQ database, developed by librarians at the Wharton School. And as part of our continuing e-volution, we’re investigating e-books and have recently purchased a set of business e-books from Palgrave (more details to come).

We continue to plan a Learning Commons which will be situated in the David Lam Library, and will feature integrated services to enhance student learning, in collaboration with other groups on campus and at Sauder.

Now is the perfect time for faculty members to drop by and have a one-on-one session with a librarian – on a topic of importance to you.
