{"id":494,"date":"2018-04-17T19:51:07","date_gmt":"2018-04-18T02:51:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/donofrio\/?p=494"},"modified":"2018-11-16T00:22:04","modified_gmt":"2018-11-16T07:22:04","slug":"careers-in-courses","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/donofrio\/careers-in-courses\/","title":{"rendered":"Bachelor of Media Studies Career Workshop"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>Lesson Plan<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Session took place on April 18, 2018 from 1-3:30pm<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Lesson plan is being used in a 2019 iteration, to be facilitated by Bachelor of Media Studies Administrator<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Introduction <\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>(5 minutes) What\u2019s the point of these activities?<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Goals:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Identifying skills, strengths, relationships\/networks from your degree (What are they, and the \u201cso what\u201d)<\/li>\n<li>Connecting those to future career planning (the \u201cnow what\u201d)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Two chunks of time, first 1\/2 looking back, second 1\/2 looking forward, you will be working individually and in groups.\u00a0 Note that this session is just a start, you will need to come back to it, and can always get further guidance at UBC\u2019s Student Careers. \u00a0 <strong>Introductory Activity<\/strong> (10 minutes) Four corners, place, people, moments, me (qualities about yourself) etc\u2026 <strong>*4 Corner Handout <\/strong>After completing, get into pairs share items from boxes. What was that like?\u00a0 What did you learn from your colleagues, what surprised you?<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Part 1:\u00a0 Moments of Significance<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>(5 minutes) Define significance, what counts as a \u201csignificant moment\u201d?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Ways you\u2019ve been impacted, (whether purposeful impact or unintended) determining values, what becomes significant, things that changed you in some way<\/li>\n<li>BMS specific examples of significant moments might be within; CCEL opportunities, specific classes, people, extracurricular activities, groups you worked with, internships, moment in an exchange, moving to Vancouver, new roommates, challenging classes, projects that affirmed something, etc\u2026<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Note:\u00a0 Moment of significant change and participatory monitoring are particular research methodologies http:\/\/www.kstoolkit.org\/Most+Significant+Change<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Timeline Activity<\/strong> (20 minutes) Think back over entire degree, remember what\u2019s possible, significant moments that stuck out, to see what\u2019s there.\u00a0 <strong>\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>*Chart Paper &amp; Markers<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Anything can be considered a significant moment, but be gentle and kind with yourself<\/li>\n<li>Chart your significant moments to deliver highs and lows, what was \u201ceasy\u201d versus what \u201ctook effort\u201d or another way to look at it is as successes vs. challenging situations, hard and easy stuff can be valuable<\/li>\n<li>Please place in point form, keywords, symbols, represent in any way you want (no long narrative needed, as long as you can speak to it from the point)<\/li>\n<li>Look back and connect to matters to you, timeline activity, moment of significant change (research methodology) Container would be the degree, map out highs and lows, layer, specific layers, skills, people who were influential, etc\u2026 How strengths, knowledge, emotions, skills and values come through in high and low moments.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Coding<\/strong>\u00a0 (15 minutes) Code or Analyze moments for skills, strengths\/values and relationships (layer the \u201cSo What\u201d on to this)<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>End with a gallery walk, major question \u201cwhat do you notice?\u201d<\/li>\n<li>What comparisons can you draw from your own experience?
