{"id":930,"date":"2018-10-17T03:05:28","date_gmt":"2018-10-17T10:05:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/donofrio\/?p=930"},"modified":"2021-11-18T12:32:34","modified_gmt":"2021-11-18T19:32:34","slug":"linking-lecture-to-lab","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/donofrio\/linking-lecture-to-lab\/","title":{"rendered":"Linking Lecture to Lab"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Lecture using TopHat response System, Linking to Lab<\/strong><\/p>\n<table style=\"height: 1148px;\" width=\"719\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"339\">Around the seventh week of the VISA 110 Large Foundation Digital Media studio class is the start of the final unit on Appropriation techniques in digital visual arts.\u00a0 The one-hour lecture introduces them to the idea of appropriation.\u00a0 I start the lesson via visual culture, by presenting students with \u201cI love Rock n\u2019 Roll\u201d by Joan Jett.\u00a0 I open up a dialogue with the class asking them what the piece stands for in culture.<\/p>\n<p>Some points I direct students to think about:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>The scene depicts a rock n\u2019 roll band fronted by Joan, a female, not seen often as a lead in a rock band<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>It is recorded in a dingy bar and filmed on gritty film<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Rock has \u201cswagger\u201d attitude, the opposite of female passivity<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Joan is known as the Godmother of Punk, a feminist icon, one of only two women on Rolling Stones greatest 100 guitarists of all time<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Feminism, revolution belonging to female, breaking rules allowed for women too!<br \/>\n<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I soon follow up with a clip of the remake by Britney Spears.\u00a0 Students then asked to dissect how this represents culture and societal values of the time, and what it does with the \u2018meaning\u2019 from Joan\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>Questions to pose:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Is it a tribute?\u00a0 Is it \u201cgirl empowering\u201d?<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Vocal shift from gritty to sultry<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Mechanical instruments vs. rock guitar<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Depiction of the female, how has it changed?<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Is it a new power?\u00a0 Or codes of old patriarch?<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>What kind of power is it?<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<td width=\"332\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/donofrio\/linking-lecture-to-lab\/screen-shot-2018-10-17-at-2-56-34-am\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-935\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-935\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/donofrio\/files\/2018\/10\/Screen-Shot-2018-10-17-at-2.56.34-AM-446x1024.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"446\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/donofrio\/files\/2018\/10\/Screen-Shot-2018-10-17-at-2.56.34-AM-446x1024.png 446w, https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/donofrio\/files\/2018\/10\/Screen-Shot-2018-10-17-at-2.56.34-AM-131x300.png 131w, https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/donofrio\/files\/2018\/10\/Screen-Shot-2018-10-17-at-2.56.34-AM-768x1762.png 768w, https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/donofrio\/files\/2018\/10\/Screen-Shot-2018-10-17-at-2.56.34-AM.png 918w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 446px) 100vw, 446px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n\n<p>I then go on to inform them that the Joan Jett version was a remake of the Arrows, and that Rock n\u2019 Roll was known as an image and sound stolen from African American culture.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>The lecture then explains Appropriation through definition and significant keywords:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cthe use of borrowed elements in the creation of a new work\u201d \u201cthe taking over, into a work of art, of a real object or even an existing work of art\u201d\u00a0 (Tate Dictionary)<\/li>\n<li>To take possession of another\u2019s material, often without permission, reusing it in a context which differs from its original context, most often in order to examine issues concerning originality \u2013 or to reveal meaning not previously seen in the original.<\/li>\n<li><strong>originality<\/strong> \u2013 what is originality? Is it a quality that can refer to the circumstances of creation? Is it about \u2018invention\u2019 by the author?\u00a0 Is originality a property of the author, or the work itself?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"text-align: center;\" width=\"416\"><em><u>Top Hat Question<\/u>:<\/em><br \/>\n<em>At this point I ask students to pull out their phones, and answer a small poll about if they believe in \u201coriginality\u201d \u2013does it exist?<\/em><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>authorship<\/strong> &#8211; one who originates or gives existence to a piece of work. Authorship then, determines a responsibility for what is created by that author. Debate Map Lesson Plan for TA&#8217;s<\/h4>\n<p>(50 minutes)<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Please have students continue from the first appropriation in-lecture activity, continuing the debate of Sherrie Levine\u2019s work.\u00a0 You will be provided with a series of responses on index cards that comprise interesting answers from TopHat by students in the class, (these will be passed on from teacher to teacher as there is only one set!) there will be some empty index cards for students who wish to add more responses to the debate of Sherrie Levine\u2019s Art vs. Theft.\u00a0 Leave the students\u2019 additions in the pack for the next class, and let us see where this goes.<\/li>\n<li>Have students arrange a \u201cdebate map\u201d with the different answers either on the white board (with magnets) or flat on tables lined at the side of the room.\u00a0 Have them order the various answers in a way that makes the divide between \u201cArt\u201d and \u201cTheft\u201d (and everything in-between or even both sides!) towards the creation of a skeleton of reasoning.\u00a0 If they wish to add in more labels, such as \u201cboth\u201d or \u201cneither\u201d or anything else that may come up<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4 style=\"padding-left: 60px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/donofrio\/linking-lecture-to-lab\/screen-shot-2018-10-17-at-3-03-41-am\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-939\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-939\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/donofrio\/files\/2018\/10\/Screen-Shot-2018-10-17-at-3.03.41-AM-749x1024.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"517\" height=\"707\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/donofrio\/files\/2018\/10\/Screen-Shot-2018-10-17-at-3.03.41-AM-749x1024.png 749w, https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/donofrio\/files\/2018\/10\/Screen-Shot-2018-10-17-at-3.03.41-AM-219x300.png 219w, https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/donofrio\/files\/2018\/10\/Screen-Shot-2018-10-17-at-3.03.41-AM-768x1050.png 768w, https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/donofrio\/files\/2018\/10\/Screen-Shot-2018-10-17-at-3.03.41-AM.png 1056w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 517px) 100vw, 517px\" \/><\/a><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>On blank index cards, have them fill in areas or add points that would complete the map that seem to be missing, if they haven\u2019t already done so.<\/li>\n<li>By the end, go over some of the answers which ultimately give evidence of our values and how they reside in art-making. You may want to ask them to place themselves on an area on the map, or to pick up a card that most represents how they feel about the work.<\/li>\n<li>In particular, in our contemporary day is skill the main indicator of a work of art work or artist?\u00a0 Does an artist sometimes have to take a wrong step (stealing) in the right direction (questioning authorship and expertise\/authority) in order to bring out larger issues?\u00a0 How does a retelling or appropriation use the initial agency of the work in its new meaning?\u00a0 (This question is vital as for the most part the appropriation projects become music video\u2019s or trailers and lack any uncovering of how the initial footage projected particular ideologies, and how appropriation can expose these and break them down, rather than perpetuate them).\u00a0 You may also want to question if the theft makes them angry, could that affect not be considered art?\u00a0 If they show that they prefer the answer \u201cthere was no point\u201d question if there really wasn\u2019t any idea or if they just didn\u2019t like the idea, or if they are somewhat focused on originality you can question if the gesture of re-authoring the work was not original?
