Attitude? or Altitude?

When you first see my title, what comes to your mind?

When I first heard of those two words, I thought it was a pronunciation mistake made by my English teacher! As time pass by, I learned that attitude determines altitude.

Two of my friends back to high school made me begin think about the effect of attitude. One of them, let’s call her A, is a hyper achiever  and always feels energetic, the other one(B) is just a normal person who sometimes jealous of A. “Why she could do everything but I can do nothing?” “Why she is so popular even though she is not pretty at all?” “Why her boyfriend is so cute and I don’t even have a boyfriend!” “Why! Why! WHY!” and her conclusion is :”life is just unfair, sometimes you are just not lucky enough.”

Do you also sometimes think the same way as her?

I used to agree with B, believing  A is more luck more intelligent than us, we cannot do anything about it. However, I changed my mind after A told me about her story. The day after she got the prize for her excellent performance in a public speaking competition, I asked why she seemed so perfect in all aspects I could think of. Surprisingly, she told me that she hated public speaking because she was teased by others in primary school when she had to speak in front of entire class. But that didn’t beat her, “I know that’s my weakness, but if I keep hiding it, it will stay as a weakness forever, I need to face it and solve it. Even though I might fail, at least I tried”, that moment I realized the difference between us: she always think positively and when she encounter a problem, her attitude encouraged and inspired her to try.

Her words really made a difference on me, I began trying to hold a better attitude towards my weaknesses and my life. When I was assigned to unfavourable work, I stopped complaining but really try hard to figure it out because I know, that’s the way to challenge myself and step our of comfort zone. When I had the most misery day, I still have hopes for tomorrow because I know it will get better as long as I hang in there. My positivity helped my survived my last year at high school, which was horrible. I still remember all the 5:30 am wake-ups and all day classes until 10:50pm. It was painful but I’m thankful I had that kind of experience, because I now have strong ability to handle stress, to multi-task and the ability to do well in math(just kidding). Now I’m still facing many challenges but I’m not scared at all.

In class we also talked about attitude in chapter 3, which is defined as positive or negative feelings about objects, people, or events. Employers consider employees’ attitude as an important indicator of job performance. Therefore, I believe students with health attitudes will not only excel at studies, but also do well in workplace in the future.

“A strong, positive and resilient attitude will help elevate you to unimaginable heights.” (Dern, N 2010) It’s not your ability which stops to to climb to a higher level, it’s your attitude.
