Diversity — Good or Bad?
A few days ago, US. President Donald Trump imposed a controversial 90-day ban on travellers from 7 Muslim countries saying that: “This is not about religion — this is about terror and keeping our country safe.” (Foster, A. 2017) Since Donald Trump became the president, he has showed his attitude toward diversity. However, Americans showed their disagreement by striking on streets of many metropolitans. So, is diversity a good thing or bad thing?
For me, diversity is a good thing. I have done many group projects in the past and I appreciate how diverse our group members are. Sometimes all of us are from different countries and have very different background. It’s always great for me to meet new people, listen to their unique stories and learn about their culture. Also, diversity makes our opinions more creative and inclusive. Not just ethnicity, diverse in characteristic is also important for me. An idea generator, a extrovert, a executor and an organizer is essential for a good team. Of course it has downside: sometimes it’s hard to form an opinion that everybody agree with, which will decrease the efficiency of the group.
As we learned in Organizational Behaviour class, diversity could foster innovation, help companies search potential opportunities and help the company build more inclusive strategies. Another great example would be McKinsey&Company, considered the most prestigious management consultancy worldwide, they believe that:” More diverse companies, we believe, are better able to win top talent and improve their customer orientation, employee satisfaction, and decision making, and all that leads to a virtuous cycle of increasing returns.” (Hunt, V.)
In conclusion, I believe it’s diversity is vital from macro(i.e. countries, companies) and micro(teams, groups) perspective.
