In- or Ex- trinsic?

Posted by in blogproject, COMM 292

I remembered the question we were asked in class: Why did you choose business school? Answer varied from money, reputation, not good at sciences to fascinated by marketing strategies, wanted to start his/her own company and interest in capital markets. Is there a right or wrong answer? Why did people think differently? Recalled extrinsic motivator and intrinsic motivator when we learned about motivation. According to Organizational Behavior by Nancy Langton, “Extrinsic motivators come from outside the person and include such things as pay, bonuses, and other intangible rewards. Intrinsic motivators…read more

I am an introvert = I should click “follower” button

Posted by in blogproject, COMM 292

There has been a long debate about whether an introvert could become a good leader and I would like to address my opinion in this blog. According to both MBTI and Big Five Personality Model, I am an introvert. Being described as “shy”, “quite”, “not participating”, “timid” is something I have got used to. Does that mean I’m not going be to a good leader? No, for there reasons: Firstly, everyone has their own leadership style. When I’m leading a group of people, I ask them to share a story…read more

“oh, you must be good at Math”

Posted by in blogproject, COMM 292

I encountered following situation for countless times after I studies abroad: “I’m from China.” “Oh you must be good at math then!” There seems to be a direct connection between “Chinese students” and “good at math”, I’m not denying that this is not true, but it’s not necessary. I believe we all stereotyped some one or be stereotyped by others for some times, Indians…read more

What Motivates You?

Posted by in blogproject, COMM 292

I remembered the question we were asked in class: Why do you study for this course, put aside the fact that you are required to take this course? Many people answered grade, few said because they love OB, they want to learn more about it. This fact made me think, which one is more effective–intrinsic motivator or extrinsic motivator? According to Organizational Behaviour by Nancy Langton, “Extrinsic motivators come from outside the person and include such things as pay, bonuses, and other intangible rewards. Intrinsic motivators come from a person’s…read more

Diversity — Good or Bad?

Posted by in blogproject, COMM 292

A few days ago, US. President Donald Trump imposed a controversial 90-day ban on travellers from 7 Muslim countries saying that: “This is not about religion — this is about terror and keeping our country safe.” (Foster, A. 2017) Since Donald Trump became the president, he has showed his attitude toward diversity. However, Americans showed their disagreement by striking on streets of many metropolitans. So, is diversity a good thing or bad thing? For me, diversity is a good thing. I have done many group projects in the past and I appreciate…read more

Attitude? or Altitude?

Posted by in blogproject, COMM 292

When you first see my title, what comes to your mind? When I first heard of those two words, I thought it was a pronunciation mistake made by my English teacher! As time pass by, I learned that attitude determines altitude. Two of my friends back to high school made me begin think about the effect of attitude. One of them, let’s call her A, is a hyper achiever  and always feels energetic, the other one(B) is just a normal person who sometimes jealous of A. “Why she could do…read more
