Customer service is a key to success: Tim Horton’s coffee vs. McDonald’s coffee

As the author indicated in the My Canadian Blog, that he is more likely to drink McDonald’s coffee than Tim’s Horton’s, because McDonald has better service than Tim Hortons’. The author feels that the service in Tim Horton’s is abysmal, and the people work there are not friendly to the customers, and coincidentally they always made wrong orders, which extremely make the author dislikes Tim’s Horton. The service provides in Tim Horton’s is slow, and people are no patient and unfriendly as they are facing customers, somewhat I agree with it. I had the same experience before in the high school like the author had. There is a Tim Horton’s around our school, and many students go to there to get some drinks during the lunch time. Every time I went to there, I saw the employees provided terrible service to the students, they hurry to continue to do next orders. It does make Tim Horton’s lost lots of customers little by little. I believe customer service is a key to success, like Zappos, who powered by service, and it makes them successful to maintain the longer and healthy relationship with customers.

One Coin for All of Your Cards

The Coin is essentially an electronic card, which is able to contain the multiple cards, included credit, debite, gift, and membership cards all you have, in one credit-sized device. It is obvious bring more convenient for the people who have tons of card. By using Bluetooth low energy and the relatived Apps downloaded in the smartphone, the owner can upload the information of card into the device easily, and making a payment immediately. It seems amazing and attractive for us, however, many people will doubt for the security of the card, so do I. Response to Sauder’s student Colin Lam’s view on the blog that he believed the future new product Coin will definitely be successful in the future. I was thinking that the security of the card is still a problem, and bring more concern for people to think more about the consequence that the Coin will bring to the society as people start to use Coin. Even there is a security system designs for the card, people will still worry about the security I think. No one can promise that the card device and the connection between the card and phone will be 100% security. However, I agree it was a good idea, and surely bring more convenient for people, but the money system is the most sensitive part for people to worry about.

Will Chinese elements help promotion?

As the Sauder’s student Zhiying Jiang said in her blog that with the rapid development of China, there remains a tendency that many film works add Chinese elements consciously. In The Big Bang Theory, Howard and Sheldon both can speak little Chinese, even become a big fan of Chinese food. Besides, in one of the most popular movies this year, Iron Man 3, one famous Chinese actor and one Chinese actress both played roles in this movie. However, the reflection from Chinese audiences is not as good as expected. Firstly, not all Chinese elements are inserted properly. The incorrect use of totem caused by culture difference, such as the difference between dragon and Chinese dragon, may irritate audiences. Secondly, some Chinese elements are inserted because of the pressure from Chinese investor. As a result, these Chinese elements are more like advertising than movie components, which left an extremely terrible expression on audiences, especially Chinese audiences. Last but not the least, it may have a negative effect on box office when taking the culture protection and prejudice into consideration. China is experiencing a shock in economics while Chinese labors and products are flooring the western market, which arose the sense of self-defense of local labors. If Chinese elements are widely inserted in American movie and TV series, the profit generated from American market may decrease as a silent protest.

By 2016, up to 110 new Wal-mart’s retailer stores will be opened in China. Definitely, the expansion of the business is a key part of Walmart’s business plan that attempts to gain more profit in China. In addition, 30 new stores have been opened this year, and 11 stores have been shut down. The company plans to close more stores, around 15 to 30, that cannot make profit to ensure that the increase in the sales can cover its expenses entirely. As the total sales declined, the company found that Chinese were more likely to do online shopping. Therefore, Wal-mart bought the Chinese online store, Yihaodian, to assist the e-commerce growth of company. Selling products on Yihaodian will help Wal-mart to get more consumers. Now Wal-mart has more power to dominate both actual business market and online business market. In this way, the company not only creates more opportunities to gain market share, but also brings more convenience for the consumers when buying their products.

Zappos: Powered by services

Zappos is the most popular online shoe store, which became very successful by providing the best consumer services. The service allows consumers to return shoes at anytime. Moreover, employees are required to provide unlimited time on phone calls, in order to guarantee that consumers are satisfied by Zappos’ unique service. It is worth to mention that the company not only provides the best services to their consumers, but also brings several irresistible benefits to the employees. For instance, the company covers the employees’ medical insurance fully; provides them free snacks and drinks within the office, and pays new employees to quit. The benefits completely explain why their employees are always passionate with their jobs and are friendly to every call-in consumer. Providing benefits to their employees is an efficient way to motivate them to preform better, as well as acknowledging the value of the employees. However, operating a company with such a powerful service system may lead people to think that the operating fee exceeds the profit. But I think it is worthy for Zappos to do so because of the increasing job satisfaction and the quality of the services provided to consumers.

Taobao’ assistant: IT system

Taobao, the biggest consumer-to-consumer trading network corporation in China, is similar as ebay and Amazon. By using an advanced technology system, which leads the traders to save time and transportation cost. It is very convenient, useful and efficient system, which helps both sellers and buyers to make decision quickly. The system gives shop owners platforms to trade online without paying high rent, and to expand the business more quickly and efficiently. While, it is easier for consumers to use the tool to find the most popular and high-quality products by looking at the rank of the products provided by previous buyers. Also, the consumers will receive the products that they are interested in, which makes the customers want to buy the products. In addition, consumers are able to look over the comments have been made on the products to help them make the best decisions. Now, Taobao expands its market across the board, which will expectedly bring more potential and values to the business market.

Price discrimination in China

(image from: http://usatoday30.usatoday.com/money/industries/food/story/2012-02-12/cnbc-starbucks-secrets-of-china-success/53040820/1)

To compete with the different prices set in different countries, people have found that Starbucks is selling coffee at a much higher price in China. For a tall (12 ounce) latte, Chinese has to pay 27 RMB, which equals to $4.42, while the coffee of the same size in the US is only $3. Many of the Chinese has complained about the unreasonable price setting. Some people argue that the price should not be set too high, because many people in the society are unable to afford the price, and have a sense of unfairness for being treated unequally. However, from my perspective, I think it is reasonable for Starbucks to set the price higher in China. In China, different coffee culture is presented, since coffee is not a very normal drink. Traditionally, Chinese are more likely to drink tea instead of coffee. Therefore, it is reasonable to set price higher in China in order to balance different market in different cultures.
