Self Assessment Reflection

I have many thoughts on the last reflection for this course. It is always good to do these self assessments periodically. Not only it allows you to review your work and progress throughout period of time, but also it allows you to see the bigger picture and assess and identify areas to improve on.

Strengths and Weakness

From revising my assignments for the web folio, I have found that I frequently get comments on missing details, avoid the use of pronouns and avoiding the negatives. I have realized that these are areas that I need to pay more attention to. When I thought I already tried to avoid the negatives, there might still be some words that have a slight negative connotation to it that can be replaced by a better word. Developing a vocabulary of positive words or positive ways to express the same thing is definitely going to be a very useful skill to have for the workplace.

Moreover, having a writing team to review each other’s work on was very nice. I realized that timeliness is a very important factor in a team setting. Even if you cannot meet the designated deadline, it is crucial to let your teammates know as soon as possible so that the team can make alternative arrangement to compensate for the time delay. Jackson has been a great peer and gave me a lot of constructive feedback for my writing. I am very grateful to have him as my peer editor. I have also learned a lot from his writing. His writing is more concise and succinct, and he is able to convey his ideas clearly as a result.

Future Career/Education Goals

In terms of my future career goals, I aspire to be a full time software engineer working under a big tech company. I believe team work is a very common part of the work in these big companies. The skills I have gained from working in my writing team are very transferable for those team environments in the workplace. In addition, writing letters, emails and memos are also common daily tasks for a worker in a big tech company. After doing so many technical writing assignments for this course, I am confident in my skills for writing emails and memos in a professional setting while employing the “YOU-Attitude”.

Lastly, I would like to thank Dr. Erika Paterson for all your patience and advice and Jackson Kuan for being an awesome partner this semester.
