Hello everyone,
My name is Duffy, and I am a third year UBC student studying computer science in the BCS program. My first degree is in physiology and pharmacology from University of Western Ontario. I am from Toronto, and some of my hobbies include dancing, longboarding, snowboarding etc.
As for previous work experiences, I have worked and volunteered at various clinics and hospitals. I helped patients in appointment scheduling and making sure they know and understand the information provided for their scheduled procedures. I also worked at a fungi lab in the third year of my first degree. I mainly worked on extracting and preparing DNA samples of fungal cultures for sequencing, and I have successfully sequenced over 100 cultures with the help of my coworkers.
Currently, my academic interest lies on combining my previous degree of understanding the human body with my current degree in computer science. I am especially interested in topics around human computer interaction, artificial intelligence and cognitive science. Hence, I chose my bridging module courses around these areas. Although I may currently have very limited knowledge in most of these areas, but I believe through the 2 years of studying at UBC, I will not only be able to gain knowledge in related topics, but also be equipped with the skills required to learn any additional knowledge needed to produce softwares technologies related to these areas through internship opportunities.
My professional interest is to work as a software engineer in big tech companies. I want to contribute my cent to projects that can better people’s lives. I would be especially interested in projects that are related in the healthcare field, as that is closely tied with my first degree.
Lastly, feel free to reach out if you have any questions or just want to have a chat. You can find my email at the top of the blog page.
I look forward to interacting with all of you, and let’s having a great semester together!
Duffy Du
