Google Map mashups as public service

I’ve blogged about Google Maps mashups before. We here at the Learning Centre even have a map mashup guide.

Here’s a very interesting, topical and, well, heartbreaking use of maps mashups: The California wildfire 2007 map mashup.

The LA Times is using this map to update people on the size of fires, how much destruction has been caused, and how firefighters are faring in containing the fires. Within our faculty, we’re using it for our AGSC 250 Food Security Program. Thankfully, we don’t need map mashups for such dire tasks.
