Introduction

The objective of this blog is to provide readers with information regarding dust-bathing for laying hens and the animal welfare issues associated with it. The majority of society accepts the use of animals for food production. Nevertheless, egg production systems have become subject to heightened levels of scrutiny. In many countries, laying hens are housed in conventional cages, also known as battery cages, where space is restricted and the only furnishings are nipples and feed troughs (Van Liere 1992,Colson et al. 2007, Van Horne and Achterbosch). As space is limited, hens are unable to express natural behaviors such as dust-bathing and wing flapping (Van Liere 1992, Van Horne and Achterbosch).
