Biography

I’m Dylan Flach, a fourth-year Food, Nutrition, and Health student in the faculty of Land and Food Systems. As my degree suggests, my professional interests surround upon improving the health and well-being of individuals through their dietary choices. I believe that the best way for me to achieve this is to become a Registered Dietitian, so that I can work as the primary nutrition advisor in the healthcare system. As such, I am currently in the process of applying to the Dietetics major at UBC. Additionally, due to the competitive nature of the UBC Dietetics program, I am also applying to Dietetics programs at the University of Alberta and McGill University. As you all can imagine, all of these applications require quite a bit of technical writing work in order to perfect a resume and letter of intent that will show (or convince) admissions teams that I am the right fit for their programs.

So, one thing leads to another, and my academic interests are generally those that lead to the eventual goal of becoming a Registered Dietitian. That is why I have chosen to take ENGL 301, as I hope that it will allow me to improve my technical writing skills for the purpose of both my Dietetics program applications, as well as for future career applications, through the realm of resumes, cover letters, and LinkedIn posts.

This course was also an appropriate choice for my academic interests as I plan to travel to Takoradi, Ghana in April; since this is exam season, I could only take online courses this semester. While in Takoradi, I plan to create and implement a nutrition care program for an elementary school. My goal for the program is to provide these students with breakfast and lunch to increase their nutrient intake and, through this, their learning capacity and overall well-being.
