H&M and its marketing strategy by Yangyang

Several days ago, I posted Valentino for GAP and also mentioned H&M’s Lavin collection. When I went through Yangyang’s blog,  I read her context about H&M strategy. Also we all knew that H&M produce the new line from H&M×Lanvin and start this promotion on Nov. 20. In today class, we learned new marketing strategy- called co-branding, which is that two brands cooperate to produce new product with both logos and names. This cooperation between Lanvin and H&M is definitely co-branding.

As we know H&M use co-branding strategy every year. In Vancouver, H&M’s strongest competitor is Zara. Their level of products and prices are similar. H&M find a way to compete Zara that sells luxury brand with lower price. Yang Yang classified that “Take H&M×Lanvin as an example, the regular price for Lanvin’s clothes ranges from $1000 and $3000, however, H&M×Lanvin line only ranges from $30 to $200, way more cheap, but the same designer!”  Now GAP also learn from H&M so that GAP has new products line-GAP & Valentino. Both H&M and GAP use co-branding marketing strategy.

Yang Yang told me why people like wear the same clothes, it’s boring! Some people like to follow their idols’ fashion styles. Yang Yang also mentioned that “not only students are buying H&M, fashion stars also like it.” Fashion stars’ clothes are also from H&M, how can people buy them not? It could be customers’ psychological effects or customer’s behavior that follows the famous celebrities. People would be proud if they wear the same clothes with celebrities. H&M correctly catch customer’s emotions and behaviors and be successful in each promotion of their co-branding products.

Do you know this famous and luxury yoga center? I think lots of you have seen this brand in Vancouver. Its branch stores locate in Vancouver downtown, Yaletown, Burnaby Highgate, and also Richmond.

Yoga becomes the most health and aerobic exercise in recent years. Most people start to do yoga to keep their body shape and health. It also can be  a kind therapy of pressure reduction or mental treatment.

They offer a wide variety of yoga styles and classes for levels. Whatever your all level, whatever your goal, we support your commitment to healthy living.  All potential have a chance that they only pay for $30 to try YYoga for 2 weeks. They can register any class in these two week.

In my own experience, I love YYoga center, because it is clean and neat. They provide all-round service. In marketing, YYoga sells their service to customers. They also provide sauna and  massage. Although all customers have to pay high price which is much more expensive than other fitness centers’ price for yoga, customers still love their great and nice service and consider that it is worth to pay as high price.

YYoga has its own unique features so that it attracts a lot of potential customers. While, most of them becomes YYoga’s loyal consumers.

This is the new ads about Panasonic GF 2 – The new portable professional camera. Although I am a Canon loyal consumer, I still want to  buy one Panasonic GF 2. First, it looks fashion and pretty, the most important reason is the white color!! For Canon, except digital cameras, most products are in black.

As we know, Canon is one of Panasonic’s strong and direct competitors, and both of them are the most famous professional camera producers. Canon G12 and Panasonic GF2 almost come into the market at the same time. If I am a consumer who don’t have any professional camera, I would buy Panasonic GF2. I like this ads. It looks neat and fresh. It seems that people only can see all views in beauty and bright colors. The best and new technology of GF2 is touch screen! It is much easier to operate for new photographer.

The products’ differentiates and new technologies are the best strategy to stake in strong competition of 3C products market (3C includes computer, communication and consumer electronic). The company have to bring out the product at the first time, or they have to improve their technology that is more advanced than their competitors’. Timing plays a significant role in this special market that all engineers compete with each other all time.

Valentino for Gap collection

Italian luxury fashion house Valentino will unveil a limited edition women’s collection for GAP. The seven-piece collection was launched to celebrate the opening of Gap’s first Italian store last week in Milan. It will arrive at Gap in London on November 27. Vogue. com.

It is the first time that Gap work with Valentino. The Valentino for GAP collection follows Valentino’s classic flower shape. It shows women’s beauty like a beautiful and sweet flower. But it is designed in dark green or dark color that represent women’s mature and feminine.

Consumers would love to buy these new collection because of its design from Valentino and cheaper than collections in Valentino branch store. All women also can own luxury brand with lower price.

Likely, H&M do the same thing each year. As we know, in Nov 23, 2010, they also have new collection by Lanvin. It is a kind marketing strategy to expand their sales and consumers’ consumptions. In fashion market, all manufacturers face the strong competition with luxury brand. How do they stake in fashion wars? Like H&M and GAP, they all choose cooperate with luxury brand to desire their consumers. If you can consume a luxury brand as lower cost, would you love to pay? Why not! All women love beauty and luxury goods. So all manufacturers win the great profit because they know what women exactly want and need.

Kiehl’s Event Today

What happened today in Kiehl’s? Why did they put the red carpet? Actually today is lady’s night and also one of Christmas events . It only opened to VIP and important investors. I am pleasure I was invited.  But when I came in today, I found everything was different as usual. The door was not locked and open for customers who were invited. Incredibly, it opened for everyone. As one of the important investors, I felt uncomfortable and it was noise.

My friend, Diana, working in Kiehl’s for 3 years, told me that the manager notice open to everyone temporarily because of stimulating their sales. I know the economy go through the recession now. All stores try to advance their sales by promoting mark-down, but you still have to respect your loyal customers. Although they still have food, champagnes, lottery draw activities and gifts to important customers, others who just walked in also have this benefits. For loyal customers, it is not fair. Might they increased their sales today though they will receive customers and stuffs’ complains.

Whatever manager wants to stimulate the store sales, he can’t change the private party that already notice loyal customers to be a  party open to public. It might be a bad example of promoting products and preventing loyal customers’ benefits. (it’s only my private ideas)

Shark fin market demand VS Environmental Issue

Most restaurants provide shark fin dishes to satisfy customers’ needs. As we know, the number of seafood restaurants in Vancouver is greater than 5, but when compared to Richmond which has more than 10 seafood restaurants, there’s higher demand for Shark Fins in Richmond – possibly due to the large amount of Asians living in Richmond. Thus Chinese restaurants prefer to operate in these areas. The location is the most important factor of distribution.  All merchants locate their stores in the place with the huge shark fin dishes demand.

Based on Asian traditions, people will serve shark fin for significant events. From some statistical research, a single serving of shark fin soup can cost as much as $100 per bowl. It is expensive. But this is why, especially in Chinese beliefs, people think that it’s social symbol of status and power to be able to afford one single serving of Shark Fin soup – especially during prominent social events such as weddings.

As a result, businesses cannot just focus solely on profit. Environmental costs have to be considered too when businesses make decision that may negatively impact external parties. Sharks need saving too – we need a balanced eco-system to sustain our planet. Although this is a traditional practice, times have changed and our planet’s dying – businesses cannot keep up the same practices as the amount of finning at present is degrading our limited resources and environment. I think how to balance the shark fin market demand and environmental problem is as important as the profit.

Based on market issue, we still have to care about our environment. Everything can be connected. Although Asians demand strongly shark fin dishes and business get huge margin profit, we also should concern on our planet.

Amazing Night

Last two days of October, people are busy on celebrating Amazing Halloween Night. I passed through Vancouver Downtown and saw a lot of people dress up. Some people wore scared masks. It should be another great opportunity to open special market for this unique holiday. Although this market is temperately opening, merchants still have a chance to earn a lot of money. Likely,  Costumes Market and Amusement Park are available special products and service on holiday. For example, PNE opens and provide special service to satisfy customers’ needs. Because of western traditions, all would like to dress up, especially kids. It is a good chance to ask for candies without parents’ allowance. Holiday events help to stimulate market development.
