{"id":40,"date":"2011-03-06T13:01:36","date_gmt":"2011-03-06T21:01:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/earlychildhoodintervention2\/?p=40"},"modified":"2014-09-23T15:07:28","modified_gmt":"2014-09-23T23:07:28","slug":"children-with-pervasive-developmental-disorders-pdd","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/earlychildhoodintervention2\/2011\/03\/06\/children-with-pervasive-developmental-disorders-pdd\/","title":{"rendered":"Children with Pervasive Developmental Disorders (PDD)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Early Intervention Dictionary describes \u201cPervasive developmental disorders\u201d (PDD)<sup>1<\/sup> as an \u201cumbrella\u201d term.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>This term refers to children diagnosed with <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/earlychildhoodintervention2\/2011\/03\/05\/children-with-autism-autism-spectrum-disorder\/\" target=\"_blank\">autism\/autism spectrum disorder<\/a> (ASD), children with <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/earlychildhoodintervention2\/2011\/03\/04\/children-with-asperger-syndrome\/\" target=\"_blank\">Asperger syndrome<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/earlychildhoodintervention2\/2011\/03\/03\/children-with-rett-syndrome\/\" target=\"_blank\">Rett syndrome<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/earlychildhoodintervention2\/2011\/03\/01\/children-with-pdd-nos-or-pervasive-developmental-disorder-%E2%80%93-not-otherwise-specified-or-pdd-nos\/\" target=\"_blank\">Pervasive Developmental Disorder<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/earlychildhoodintervention2\/2011\/03\/01\/children-with-pdd-nos-or-pervasive-developmental-disorder-%E2%80%93-not-otherwise-specified-or-pdd-nos\/\" target=\"_blank\">Not Otherwise Specified<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/earlychildhoodintervention2\/category\/2-1-children-with-pervasive-developmental-disorders-pdd-childhood-degenerative-disorder\/\" target=\"_blank\">Childhood Disintegration disorder<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>These disorders are termed \u201c<a title=\"Neuro-development is a term that refers to the development of the nervous system that is related to all the skills a child acquires.\">neurodevelopmental<\/a>&#8221; (see full <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/earlychildhoodintervention1\/files\/2012\/02\/ECI_Glossary.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Glossary<\/a>) because they affect the development of children\u2019s social, language, communication and behavior.<\/li>\n<li>Children diagnosed with PDD as the \u201cumbrella\u201d term generally show stereotyped or \u201critual- like\u201d behaviors and have moderate to severe difficulties with social communication and interactions (or \u201creciprocal\u201d communication).<\/li>\n<li>In North America, approximately one in 1000 children receives a PDD diagnosis by the age of 5 years. For children diagnosed with <a title=\"Children with Autism \/ Autism Spectrum Disorder\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/earlychildhoodintervention2\/2011\/03\/05\/children-with-autism-autism-spectrum-disorder\/\" target=\"_blank\">Autism Spectrum Disorder<\/a>, ASD, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.autismsocietycanada.ca\/index.php?option=com_content&amp;view=article&amp;id=55&amp;Itemid=85&amp;lang=en\" target=\"_blank\">prevalence<\/a> is even higher, 1 in 88 children.<\/li>\n<li>Children with PDD may also show symptoms of psychiatric conditions, including <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/earlychildhoodintervention2\/category\/2-5-children-with-other-types-of-disorders-adhd\/\" target=\"_blank\">attention deficit disorder<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/earlychildhoodintervention2\/category\/2-9-children-with-other-types-of-mental-illness\/\" target=\"_blank\">oppositional defiant behaviors<\/a> (see Module \u00a01A and Module 2)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It is important for physicians and others in the medical and health professions to learn about the early signs of PDD. \u00a0This way they can work with parents and begin a referral process in order to assess and either rule out or confirm the PDD diagnosis between the ages of 2 and 3 years<sup>2<\/sup>, as opposed to waiting until the age of 5 years.<\/p>\n<p>To learn about PDD in the middle childhood years, please visit the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/middlechildhoodintervention2\/category\/2-3-children-with-established-risk-conditions-autism\/\" target=\"_blank\">six to 12 part of this course<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h5>1.
