Like children with <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/earlychildhoodintervention2\/2011\/03\/05\/children-with-autism-autism-spectrum-disorder\/\" target=\"_blank\">ASD<\/a>, children with Rett syndrome experience difficulty learning how to talk and relate to others. They may also engage in <a title=\"Persistent, repetitious abnormal behaviors, which interfere with the child ability to \u201csit still\u201d. Example for this behavior are: hand flapping and rocking, or spinning the wheels of a toy truck without exploring it in other ways.\">self-stimulatory<\/a> (see full <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/earlychildhoodintervention1\/files\/2012\/02\/ECI_Glossary.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Glossary<\/a>) and\/or repetitive behaviors, and may have difficulty regulating their sensory system.<\/p>\n<p>Children with Rett syndrome often start life developing like any typical child. Sometime between the ages of 6 months and 2 years, the brains of children with Rett syndrome stop developing. When this happens, these children end up losing some of the skills they have learned. Brain development may resume, but after a period of non-growth. All lost skills will have to be re-taught.<\/p>\n<h3>Description<\/h3>\n<p>Children with Rett syndrome\u00a0(Fig. 1) often have seizures and many of them keep wringing and unwringing their fingers. Children with Rett Syndrome require ongoing individualized attention from their parents and caregivers. Their needs are high in terms of their health, behavior and safety. These children also require frequent follow up with their regular feeding, dressing, changing and bathing routines. Parents and caregivers may experience exhaustion and, in some cases, despair when situations get to be overwhelming. Home support and ongoing intervention for parents and caregivers is essential to prevent parents from \u201closing\u201d their sense of being in charge of their kids.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1188\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1188\" style=\"width: 259px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/earlychildhoodintervention2\/files\/2011\/03\/Girl-with-Rett-syndrome.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1188 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/earlychildhoodintervention2\/files\/2011\/03\/Girl-with-Rett-syndrome.jpg\" alt=\"Girl with Rett syndrome\" width=\"259\" height=\"387\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/earlychildhoodintervention2\/files\/2011\/03\/Girl-with-Rett-syndrome.jpg 259w, https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/earlychildhoodintervention2\/files\/2011\/03\/Girl-with-Rett-syndrome-200x300.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 259px) 100vw, 259px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1188\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>Figure 1. A girl with Rett Syndrome<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/earlychildhoodintervention3\/\" target=\"_blank\">Intervention Options<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Intervention options are strategies, programs and resources that are available for parents and for service providers working with children with additional needs, and the professionals working with children and families:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Infant or child support development consultant through the\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/earlychildhoodintervention3\/category\/3-2-the-i-professionals\/\" target=\"_blank\">Infant Development Program<\/a>\/ <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/earlychildhoodintervention3\/category\/3-1-the-a-professionals\/\" target=\"_blank\">Aboriginal Infant Development Program<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/earlychildhoodintervention3\/category\/3-2-the-s-professionals\/\" target=\"_blank\">Supported Child Development Progra<\/a>m\/ <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/earlychildhoodintervention3\/category\/3-1-the-a-professionals\/\" target=\"_blank\">Aboriginal Supported Child Development<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/earlychildhoodintervention3\/2012\/01\/29\/sensory-integration-specialist\/\" target=\"_blank\">\u00a0Sensory Integration therapy <\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/earlychildhoodintervention3\/category\/3-2-the-r-professionals\/\" target=\"_blank\">Academic preparation:<\/a> children with Rett syndrome may have difficulties with specific <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/earlychildhoodintervention1\/category\/1-3-cognitive-development-pre-academic\/\" target=\"_blank\">learning skills<\/a> and will benefit from the help of small group and\/or individualized learning support from a <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/earlychildhoodintervention3\/category\/3-2-the-r-professionals\/\" target=\"_blank\">resource teacher<\/a>. An Individualized Educational Program or Plan (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bcssa.org\/media\/4921\/IEP.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">IEP<\/a>) needs to be in place for children with Rett syndrome.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Interventionists working with children with Rett syndrome include the following:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/earlychildhoodintervention3\/2012\/01\/29\/occupational-therapist\/\" target=\"_blank\">Occupational therapist<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/earlychildhoodintervention3\/2012\/01\/30\/physiotherapist\/\" target=\"_blank\">Physiotherapist<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/earlychildhoodintervention3\/category\/3-1-the-b-professionals\/\" target=\"_blank\">Behavioral therapist<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/earlychildhoodintervention3\/category\/3-2-the-s-professionals\/\" target=\"_blank\">Speech language pathologist<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/earlychildhoodintervention3\/2012\/01\/30\/therapists-mental-health\/\" target=\"_blank\">Mental health<\/a> therapists<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Rett syndrome is a disorder that primarily affects girls.
