Accessibility in the Field
The phrase “accessibility in the field” is commonly associated with accommodations for people with a variety of physical and mobility disabilities. Less commonly people with “invisible” disabilities or those who are able to pass are also considered. In the EaSEIL initiative we interpret the phrase as widely as possible to consider any barriers that may prove difficult for students as they begin their work in the field. As part of our work we have produced a literature review as well as resources and guides for instructors and students.
- Two partner students produced a literature review about experiences of students with disabilities in geoscience field setting.
- We developed tools, resources and guides for both instructors and students:
- Design Tool # 2: Field Experience Scenarios
- Supporting Students with Disabilities
- Self-Advocacy Guide for Students with Disabilities at UBC
- We held focus groups with students (with and without disabilities) to discuss their experiences in field settings
