Virtual Tour of the UBC-Teck Geological Field Station

Virtual Tour of the UBC-Teck Geological Field Station

Led by Cynthia Liu with the support from Abhideep Singh (Student Partners), the Virtual Tour project was created to provide an immersive virtual experience for students to become familiar with the UBC-Teck Geological Field Station, where they will be learning and living.

The tour is built for UBC students who will be attending courses (geology, forestry, and conservation field school), TAs, and professors who will be teaching them, and communities beyond UBC.

The team felt that a virtual tour would create meaningful and engaging interactions between students and technology that better prepares students and fosters a connection to the field site. Our main goals were to reduce uncertainty and anxiety around learning at the UBC-Teck Geological Field Station, increasing their motivation and interest in land-based learning and making field course work more accessible for those with mobility impairments. By frontloading students with key information, the virtual tour prevents cognitive overload and improves students’ comprehension academically. It also offers learning opportunities for individuals who are not able to travel to the station to experience the field station. For future instructors, this can be a valuable resource to use when planning courses.

The station is located near Oliver, BC, on Syilx Okanagan Nation’s land.

The team have used Lapentor software to create 360 degree scenes in which users can experience the land multimodally. The team is thrilled to create an accessible immersive virtual tour using the latest technology which creates remote high-quality learning experiences to support students in their field study.

This 360 degree sample scene below features the inside of the station that serves as an eating, social, and work area for students and staff.

To interact… click the top right rectangle with arrows to engage full-screen mode. Click, hold, and drag to view different spaces in the scene on any space of the scene to explore. Use the escape key or press the escape button (bottom left) to leave full screen.
