It consists of a lecture (2 hours once a week) followed by 2-hour lab (once a week) and includes <strong>mandatory field trips <\/strong>(during scheduled class\/lab time)<strong> to various locations in Metro Vancouver<\/strong>, British Columbia, Canada. Topics include desk studies, field work, remote sensing, drilling and sampling techniques.<br>Note: The course is also open to 3<sup>rd<\/sup>\/4<sup>th <\/sup>year and engineering \u2018exchange\u2019 students (space permitting)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:42px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:22px\"><strong>Overarching Learning Goals<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:20px\">Students will work on their abilities to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list margingSpaceLeft\">\n<li style=\"font-size:20px\">Design site investigations tailored to project objectives and anticipated site conditions and constraints, based on common practices in the local geological engineering industry<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:20px\">Contribute positive and productively in a small team setting<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:20px\">Communicate engineering concepts and design to peers, professionals, and non-technical audiences<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-cover is-light\"><span aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-cover__background has-background-dim-100 has-background-dim\" style=\"background-color:#f7f7f7\"><\/span><div class=\"wp-block-cover__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-cover-is-layout-constrained\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-accent-color has-text-color has-link-color has-larger-font-size wp-elements-63a8e544e94c32f990197c16541582c5\"><strong><strong>Activities Summary<\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns are-vertically-aligned-center is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-8f761849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-vertically-aligned-center is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:100%\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li style=\"font-size:20px\">In-class lessons and lab activities (lessons and labs include occasional guest speakers)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:20px\"><strong>Local Field trips<\/strong> during both class and lab time with exercises graded as part of the lab component. Field trips are organized in collaboration with industry partners who assist with teaching, demonstrations, and touring. Field trips include a Q&amp;A component where students can ask industry partners about their career journey and academic advice. Examples of field trips: sonic drilling, cone penetration testing, site visits to relevant industry projects within the community.<br><em>The instructor creates these field trips and associated activities to:<\/em>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-list\" style=\"font-size:20px\">Provide concrete experiences as opportunities for students to experiment and reflect on the abstract and theoretical content covered in class, as part of experiential learning.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:20px\">Get an impression and appreciate a day of the life of engineers working on industry projects, and to demystify the professional engineer. Students are able to interact with industry professionals, drillers, and engineers during field trips and guest talks in the classrooms allowing them to experience what the work culture is like in industry.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:20px\">Inspire students to further engage and think about geological engineering outside of the classroom by seeing the impact geological engineering work plays in projects in the community and society.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:20px\">Expose students to the tunnelling industry to motivate and inspire students to consider tunnelling as there is a growing demand in Canada for engineers and expertise in this space.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:20px\"><strong>Assessment:<\/strong> Weekly lab work; Prepare <\/strong>students <strong>for learning<\/strong> <strong>and being professionals in the field<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:20px\"><strong>Activities<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li style=\"font-size:20px\">Incorporated safety related practices such as field level hazard assessment and safety risk mitigation through new in-class\/lab activity (as of 2023): Students review complete safety forms prior to the field trip and perform field level risk assessments as a group<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:20px\">Developed a new industry partnership for students to connect with meaningful\/current geoengineering projects (tunnelling) (in 2024-2025). Integrate Indigenous perspectives and context<\/strong> to support student appreciation and reflection on how these relate to their field of work<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:20px\"><strong>Activities<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li style=\"font-size:20px\">Students are required as part of desktop studies to identify Indigenous communities (<a href=\"https:\/\/native-land.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">native-land.ca<\/a>) and archeological sites in the areas their term project is situated on (as of 2023-2024)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:20px\">Included a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musqueam.bc.ca\/our-story\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Musqueam<\/a> Educational Tour (history, culture, traditions) complimented with a reflection exercise during the tour. It was validating to hear them saying was such a sensory experience and provided validation to me on them reflecting on the concrete experience and going through a cycle of Kolb\u2019s experiential learning. Seeing and hearing their final presentation further validated them using the knowledge from that concrete experience to experiment and alter the final site investigations design. That was my goal as an instructor, to plant that seed \u2026 and view learning about these topics as an <strong>ongoing learning journey<\/strong> since it&#8217;s constantly evolving. Identify Indigenous -authored sources and create opportunities for discussion.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:20px\">Engage students in activities that contextualize potential career paths early on in their programs.
