Method

We compared students from LFS and students from a non-LFS faculty and we used students from the Physics department to represent the non-LFS population.

We used a randomized systematic surveying method: every fifth student that comes out of the Macmillan building, the FNH building, and the Hennings building at different times ( 9:50-10am, 11:50am-12:00 pm, 2:50-3:00 pm, 4:50-5:00 pm) and days were surveyed. We chose this sampling method because it gives each student in the population an equal possibility of being selected, so that the samples are more likely representative of their respective populations.

We designed a written survey without the amount of calories printed beside each food to minimize the chance of measurement bias.

The survey:

1. Which faculty are you from?

2. Please circle 5 snack foods that you consume most frequently on a weekly basis:

Potato chips

French fries

Granola bars

Yogurt

Muffins/Donuts

Fresh fruits

Low-sodium crackers

Butter popcorn

Soft drinks

Cookies

Dark chocolates

Ice Cream

Nuts and seeds

Smoothies

Chocolate bars or candies

Veggies

Other:

(Please specify)

Then we compared if the foods they chose were more healthy foods or more unhealthy foods to determine if they prefer either healthy snacks or junk snacks.

We used this as our answer key to determine their healthy or unhealthy status:

HEALTHY

UNHEALTHY

Fresh fruits

Potato chips

Granola bars

French fries

Nuts and seeds

Butter popcorn

Smoothies

Cookies

Dark chocolates (>35% cocoa solids)

Chocolate bars or candies

Yogurt

Muffins/Donuts

Low-sodium crackers

Soft drinks

Veges

Ice Cream

For Example, a survey like this one would mean that the participant is considered healthy:

(Note: this is only a sample as we ensured that all participant’s responses were not disclosed to any third parties and were to remain confidential)

We will make sure that the participants remain anonymous and that they were to participate on a voluntary basis.
