Carolyn Merchant has been dubbed as an eco-feminist philosopher and is a professor of Environmental History, Philosophy and Ethics at the University of California Berkeley. She is most famous for her theory of “The Death of Nature” in which she identifies the Scientific Revolution as a time when the study of science began to exploit nature. Her research includes discussing the interrelationship between these three topics and is primarily concerned with human interactions with the natural environment. Her goal is “to deepen our understanding of how humans have been affected by their natural environment through time, and conversely. . . how they have affected that environment and with what results.” She continues to work towards the ideal of a sustainable partnership with the natural world.
Merchant has authored numerous books including: The Death of Nature: Women, Ecology, and the Scientific Revolution (1980), Ecological Revolutions: Nature, Gender, and Science in New England (1989);Radical Ecology: The Search for a Livable World (1992); Earthcare: Women and the Environment (1996); The Columbia Guide to American Environmental History (2002); and Reinventing Eden: The Fate of Nature in Western Culture(2003), as well as many articles on the history of science, environmental history, and women and the environment.

Thankyou Carolyn.Heard you at University of Victoria years ago …I was quietly thrilled, my now ex and his colleagues dismissive and grumpy. You even referred to the larks on campus! My ecofeminist record has brought me much joy, including being a founder of Canada’s Raging Grannies. Now I see we are exactly the same age! to the day! Gratitude for all your work, wishing you continued strength and power. Doran Doyle
