Merchant, C. (2002). A conversation with Carolyn Merchant. California Monthly, 112(6).
“We need to change the way we think about the ecological crisis before we can solve it.”
In this article, Russell Schoch (the editor of California Monthly) interviews Carolyn Merchant regarding her opinions on the evolution of the state of the environment and the recover of nature. The article serves as our guide to reflecting on the negative effects of educational technology on the environment.
Schoch begins by introducing Merchant, detailing her career and discussing how she became interested in the history of both the environment and feminism. He then goes on to question Merchant about what she describes as the “global ecological crisis” affecting the earth’s ecology.
Merchant goes on to talk about her book “Reinventing Eden: Western Culture as a Recovery Narrative” and how humanity needs to go about recovering our earth, or the Garden of Eden. She speaks of an idealistic “partnership ethic” where people and nature would become equally important and a shift of consciousness would occur about our responsibilities towards environmental stewardship.
