Carolyn Merchant suggests that in our “global ecological crisis” we need a “new narrative”, where we balance the basic human needs with environmental integrity and sustainability. Merchant calls this balance a “partnership ethic”.
In Zhao and Frank’s article, they discuss the metaphor of the ecology system as a framework for the issues surrounding the integration of computer use in the school system. But in our ecological crisis, perhaps we should welcome the “invasion” mentality so we do have a balance. If we allow for technology to become more easily integrated into our schools, will it not perpetuate the capitalist “progressive narrative” that Merchant refers to? Is is possible that as we are defining technology in an ecological framework, that we are already moving towards the “new narrative”?
