Classmate’s Blog: The Cellphone Market

In Canada, there are three major telecoms carriers, TELUS, ROGERS and BELL. Of course, there are little carriers, using different names under those major carriers but I am just looking at a bigger picture here. I think the cell phone market in Canada is monopolistically competitve market and they are competing each other to capture more market shares than others. There are high barriers for new carriers to come into market and compete against those three major carriers so customers must choose one of three carriers if they want to use cell phones in Canada.

Then, what are their strategy to capture more customers from their competitors and finally win this market? In Colton’s blog, he is saying that there are three different factors that affect customers’ decisions: the customer service, reception and selection. First, the customer service begins when new customer enter into a carrier store. The atmosphere of store and service of employees highly affect new customer’s decision making. Also, billing service or different kind of plans that carrier is offering also influence customer’s satisfaction. Another important factor that a lot of customers care is the reception of phones. It is essential for carriers to have broad service range to reduce reception ploblem. If your phone always go out of service, you would consider changing your carrier. Last factor is the freedom of selection. Different companies offer different phones and data plans. If there is a new phone released and it is your favorite phone, you would choose that carreir which offers that certain phone. That is why carriers put much effort to make a contract with as many phone manufacturers as possible to provide various phones. 

Currently, those major three carriers in Canada evenly shares the market, so it is interesting to observe what kinds of new strategies they would come up with to eat out other carrier’s shares and success in the market. For marketers, it is crucial to create effective marketing strategies for those carriers not to fall behind the market and hold as many customers as possible for companies’ success.

Classmate’s Blog: A Tremendous Save by Travolta?

In Jenny Chan’s blog, I found one interesting post about famous movie actor John Travolta and how he saved Qantas, one of the biggest airlines in the world. Personally, I am a huge fan of him because I like his movies and his lifestyle. Even he is a movie star, he knows how to fly airplanes. I saw his house once on the internet and his place was totally amazing. He owns two jets and runaway at his backyard. Okay, so in Jenny’s post, there is a short video where John says he is a huge fan of Qantas Airline. At the beginning, I didn’t know why he was saying that. However, after awhile, I realized that Qantas Airline actually casted John Travolta to recover their losses from technical problems which happened few weeks ago. The truth is few airplanes from Qantas Airline experienced technical problem right after getting off, so many passengers were suffering from the fear. After those unexpected accidents, Qantas Airline got damaged in their brand image so they came up with the idea of casting John Travolta as a strategical move. By casting John Travolta, who is an expert in airplanes, and letting him say good things about Qantas Airline, Qantas Airline was able to save themselves from Qantas going down situation.

In marketing perspective, Qantas Airline made a right decision to cast John Travolta. Because he is known as an Airplane man, people have no doubt of what he says especially when he talks about airplanes. Strategically, Qantas Airline uses the social image of John Travolta effectively to hold passangers away. Good job Qantas! Travolta saved you!

External Blog: Relevant Content Drives Business Value

I found really interesting marketing blog about the social media.

I would like to make a comment on the post he published on November 23. He basically talked about the importance of content, saying “content is king”. At the end, he said “It’s about the right content, at the right time, to the right person in the right channel. “.  I strongly agree with his statement. There are tons of contents around us, but we always look for only contents that we really need for. As companies, it’s always question that how they advertise their contents and values at the right time, to the right person who is really desperate of it in the right channel. Companies suddenly recieved a package of questions, direcly related to their success in markets. How do they create the right contents? When do they release their contents to whom through which channel? This is when marketing experts kick in  and solve those questions for companies. With successful strategies created by smart marketers, that company would be successful in their market as well. Thus, choosing relevant contents definitely increases the value of business.

Today, let’s talk about advertisements all around the world. There are millions of companies out there and every one of companies tries to use many communication methods to contact with consumers and markets.There are many different kinds of communication functions but the most basic and common one is “advertising”. An advertising is an useful method to communicate with consumers in many ways. If a company create an advertising which is very interesting, many consumers would be more likely to remember the product that a company is advertising. Capturing consumers’ interest is one key of success in markets. Or if a company create a remarkable ad, it would have more chance of being remmebered by consumers than other mediocre ads. 

You can easily guess what product that this ad is trying to sell. Yes, it advertises Energizer battery. It actually proves how strong a Energizer battery is by holding a bridge only with one hand.

 This is a bike helmet adversiting. He got injured all his body except his head because LAZER helmet saved his life.

What about this ad? It’s a WMF knife adversiting. This WMF knife is so sharp that it can even cut cut the cutting board. At the end, it says “Sharper than you think”.

What are the characteristics of those three advertisings above? I think all of them are more creative than other ads and they actually make people laugh or at least giggle. Now, when people go to shop and see those products on the shelf, they would recall those ads in their minds. Then, they might have more positive thoughts than other products and finally they would decide to put them in their shopping carts. It seems like companies now should hire not only smart applicants but also creative thinkers.

Foldable Keyboard?

Today’s amazing item that I am about to introduce is a foldable keyboard. Have you ever imagined a keyboard that can be fold like a folding fan? Two brilliant Korean designers said in the press that they designed this item for their Non-bacteria project, aimed at how to effectively reduce the spread of infection by bacteria. As a matter of fact, there are tons of bacterias living on almost everything near us. The only problem is that we don’t realize their actual existence because we barely see them in our sight. I think it is an useful idea that we should fold our keyboards when not using it, so that we can reduce the time being exposed to the danger of infection by bacterias.  

It not only satisfies the initial purpose by generating a possibility of reducing the number of bacterias, but also gives us an additional benefit, which is the portability. I never see any UBC student who brings their own home keyboard to lectures. There might be some people who actually want to bring their keyboards to classes but it’s not possible for most of people because of its big size and inconvience of carrying. However if it can be folded and be put into our bags, it’s totally a new revolution. Then, everyone will be carrying their own keyboards at school! They also don’t worry about being contaminated by bacterias so there will be less people being sick and our environment will be much fresher than now. I am sure I will be the one who will buy this item if it goes in public!

The highest climbing wall in the world

I introduce you the highest climbing wall in the world. The height of this wall is about 37 metres and it is constructed by a steel and wood for the purpose of realistic practicing. It is located in Klimcentrum Bjoeks, Groningen, the Netherlands.

Well, what is this related to marketing? I’m sure it reminds us the basic strategy in marketing. In order to be successful in the market, companies, products or services must be the best. The market only remembers the first place. Be the best!

Google? It’s a newly created word by two genious googlers, now the founder of the most fascinating company in the world of history. Google has been ranked by many kinds of surveys as one of the best company, providing splendid workplace and employee benefits. Google has not only conquered the world wide web but also fascinated many employees all over the world. In marketing perspective, Google is such a successful model to research. 

I think their basic marketing strategy is based on the concept of simplicity. By simplifying everything related to Google, Google itself represents the success of simplism now. You can observe different but successful strategy in Google’s home page. Unlike other web sites, full of ads and images, Google’s homepage is very simple. You never see any fancy advertisements or top news on Google’s homepage. While other competitors in same industry were caring about how they are looked by internet users, Google has silently created the most powerful Web Search Engline in the world. It’s so enormous and popular that now there is a verb, google. These days, people don’t say I need to search this word. Instead, they would say I’ll google it. It’s a tremendous revolution made by Google.   

What’s the driving force of all these success? I would say Google has a strong and reliable relationship with their employees. Employees working for Google love their company. Their true loyalty toward their company is the main force that lead Google to the gate of success. For their employees, Google never tightens their money belt. Google supports each one of their employees by providing excellent working environment or offering employee benefits. It’s time for other corporates to learn the way Google motivate their employees. Motivation is the main force that drives human being. Without motivation an incentives, no one will be active.
