“I am from” Poem & Introduction

I am from Oceanspray

from an Island of markets, beaches,

and the Pacific ocean

I am from flowers –

delicate, bright.

Fresh Rain.

From These trees are 800 years old. Preserve this beautiful history.

From Claire

and Lanie

From chives

and Kinnikinnick

I am from the whisk

Mixing, blending,

Roasts

Scotch Broom

and Christmas feasts.

“I am from” poem adapted from Rubí Orozco Santos.

Helloooo!

My name is Emma (she/her)! I was born in Medicine Hat Alberta, however I moved away at a very young age, and don’t remember anything! We moved to Vancouver Island – which is where I grew up, in a city called Parksville (however, it has always felt much smaller than an average city). Currently, I am living in Vancouver. I am in my second year at UBC, where I am majoring in Psychology. Some fun and random facts about me: I love music, bubble tea, and photography! I’m also a big fan of going to the beach, and late-night drives. 🙂

I decided to enroll in this class because I thought that it would be really interesting – especially since it feels quite applicable to my own background. My father was from Chile, and I have some Indigenous ancestry linked to a few areas in Latin America. However, I never really had much of a chance to learn about the Indigenous communities or that side of my family, so I’ve been finding myself more and more interested in Latin American culture. I am excited to learn about the connection between the land, the food and its history in relation to the Indigenous Communities as well.

Super excited to get to know everyone! 😀

Thanks for Reading!

Emma

  1. I’ve been wondering what the bright red berries I see around Vancouver are… thanks for teaching me a new shrub name (Kinnikinnick)! And I’m thrilled to hear that our class might give you a chance to learn more about your own Indigenous ancestry on your dad’s side. Welcome to LAST303, Emma!

  2. Hi Emma! I also grew up on Vancouver Island and am in my second year in psychology at UBC! Its quite a strange coincidence to have that much in common! I grew up in Gordon Head but I’m not sure exactly where Parksville is. Bubble tea is my favourite drink and I was happy to see you like it too. Do you have any good bubble tea places to recommend?

    • Oh wow, that’s so cool to have so much in common already! I don’t know too much about Gordon Head, but Parksville is probably about 2 hours away from that area! I’m definitely still trying out new bubble tea places, but a solid place for me is Chatime – Anywhere you might recommend to try out? 😀
