A Special Series on the EDST Blog
The EDST Blog is excited to launch a new Special Series: Neurodiversity and the University.
Neurodiversity is a paradigm that recognizes the natural spectrum of human minds and ways of being. This series is about celebrating the creativity, strengths, and wisdom of neurodivergent people, while also reflecting on what it means to navigate academic spaces that are often built around neuro-normative assumptions.
We know that recent public discourse has pathologized neurodiversity—particularly Autistic communities, among others. In response, this series seeks to center neurodiverse voices themselves, meeting these harmful narratives with solidarity, affirmation, and the power of lived experience.
Who Can Contribute?
This call is open to the entire UBC community: students, staff, faculty, and community members. We especially welcome contributions from LGBTQ2S+, IBPOC, Two-Spirit, disabled, and multiply divergent voices. Neurodiversity is always lived at intersections, and this series aims to reflect that richness.
What Can You Submit?
We welcome contributions in any form:
- Short essays or reflections (300–1200 words)
- Creative writing (stories, poems, freewrites)
- Visual art, comics, or photography
- Multimedia or audio recordings (voice-to-text welcome)
- Academic pieces written accessibly for a broad audience
Submissions can be named, anonymous, or pseudonymous. Already written something you’d like to share? We’re happy to adapt and showcase existing work.
Want to Contribute but Need Support?
We know that the process of writing and submitting can sometimes feel overwhelming. If you’d like to contribute but need support, please reach out to Ella Wright, Blog Editor (edstblog.editor@ubc.ca)
