Once a month doctoral students and candidates will present their research to department students, staff and faculty. After their presentations, speakers will respond to audience questions. What happens when settlers leave after colonizing a Northern area? Using methods from political history and historical geography, Anderson conducted textual and document analysis, synthesizing his findings and positioning them in their spatial and temporal context.<\/p>\n<h5><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1908 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/edst\/files\/2023\/10\/Jed-Anderson-2-1024x256.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"645\" height=\"161\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/edst\/files\/2023\/10\/Jed-Anderson-2-1024x256.png 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/edst\/files\/2023\/10\/Jed-Anderson-2-300x75.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/edst\/files\/2023\/10\/Jed-Anderson-2-768x192.png 768w, https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/edst\/files\/2023\/10\/Jed-Anderson-2-695x174.png 695w, https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/edst\/files\/2023\/10\/Jed-Anderson-2-480x120.png 480w, https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/edst\/files\/2023\/10\/Jed-Anderson-2.png 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 645px) 100vw, 645px\" \/><\/h5>\n<p style=\"font-family: Georgia; font-size: 16px;\">This framework yielded an analysis that differentiated between three regions in Northern BC\u2014<em>Northcentral BC, Northeastern BC,<\/em> and <em>Northwestern BC<\/em>\u2014each with its own particular characteristics and its own unique trends of colonization.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-family: Georgia; font-size: 16px;\">Driven by resource extraction, the developing railway system in <span style=\"color: #002145;\"><strong>Northcentral BC<\/strong> <\/span>brought with it the development of higher education institutions on the railway path.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-family: Georgia; font-size: 16px;\">In the <strong><span style=\"color: #002145;\">Northeas<\/span>t<\/strong>, hopes for gold extraction were supplanted by an agricultural land-rush shaped by the formulation of scientific colonization. This Great Depression-era settlement effort was planned and closely monitored by researchers from both BC and Alberta. This colonization was accompanied by the establishment of higher education institutions alongside scientific colonization efforts, and soon after struggles over jurisdiction of these institutions ensued between Alberta and British Columbia. Here, a flourishing arts program was consistently defunded, and resources were transitioned towards resource extraction.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-family: Georgia; font-size: 16px;\">Finally, the <span style=\"color: #002145;\"><strong>Northwest<\/strong><\/span> saw the earliest violent contact between settlers and Indigenous people, where multiple imperial projects competed for the same space. Massive industrial projects in the region before and after World War Two brought in settlers, but when these projects winded down, a process of unsettlement occurred by which settlers left for economic reasons and Indigenous people asserted their right to self-determination. This opportunity for Indigenous capacity-building was reflected, among other things, in new higher education institutions that emphasized Indigenous perspectives and needs.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1439 size-full alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/edst\/files\/2023\/05\/Screen-Shot-2023-05-01-at-1.06.15-PM-e1682971669974.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"270\" height=\"41\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-family: Georgia; font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"color: #002145;\"><strong>An<\/strong> <strong>examination of these three regions<\/strong> <\/span>shows how, despite an expected level of homogeneity, <span style=\"color: #002145;\"><strong>there is considerable diversity in the development of higher education in Northern BC<\/strong><\/span>. Differing contexts and contingencies, coupled with the weakening of colonial institutions, allowed for considerable change in the three regions, that is reflected in the development of higher education and the sort of challenges and questions that each region grapples with.
