{"id":87,"date":"2012-03-10T11:06:40","date_gmt":"2012-03-10T18:06:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/edst591\/?p=87"},"modified":"2012-03-25T21:33:12","modified_gmt":"2012-03-26T04:33:12","slug":"creating-safe-welcoming-community","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/edst591\/creating-safe-welcoming-community\/","title":{"rendered":"Health is Creating a Safe and Welcoming Community for Everyone"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Understanding <a href=\"http:\/\/www.edu.gov.mb.ca\/k12\/cur\/cardev\/gr9_found\/courage_poster.pdf\">Circle of Courage teachings <\/a>(Brendtro, Brokenleg, &amp; Van Bockern, 1990) can help us to know how to create a safe and welcoming community for everyone. The <a title=\"Circle of Courage\" href=\"http:\/\/www.reclaiming.com\/content\/about-circle-of-courage\">Circle of Courage<\/a> identifies four fundamental needs of all children: Belonging, Mastery, Independence, and Generosity.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Spirit of Belonging:<br \/>\n<\/strong>The universal longing for human bonds is cultivated by relationships of trust so that the child can say, \u201cI am loved\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Spirit of Generosity:<br \/>\n<\/strong>Character is cultivated by concern for others so that the child can say, \u201cI have purpose for my life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Spirit of Mastery:<br \/>\n<\/strong>The inborn thirst for learning is cultivated; by learning to cope with the world, the child can say, \u201cI can succeed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Spirit of Independence:<br \/>\n<\/strong>Free will is cultivated by responsibility so that the child can say, \u201cI have the power to make decisions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When a community recognizes a set of shared values and strives to achieve it, all will benefit from it. Here is an example of the Circle of Courage being incorporated into the philosophy of a class of 28 grade five and six students in Alexander Ferguson School in Calgary, Alberta. On their blog, <em><a href=\"http:\/\/projects.cbe.ab.ca\/AlexFerg\/showcase07-08\/rehakclassblog1\/default7.htm\">Life in Room Eight &#8211; A Sharing of Our Learning<\/a><\/em>, the class reflected on the teaching of the Circle of Courage after the classroom was vandalized (See February 25, 2008 post entitled &#8220;Turning a bad story into a good story&#8221;, which includes the teacher&#8217;s introduction and links to student podcasts.)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/edst591\/files\/2012\/03\/CircleOfCourageWheel.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-93\" title=\"CircleOfCourageWheel\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/edst591\/files\/2012\/03\/CircleOfCourageWheel-294x300.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"363\" height=\"370\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/edst591\/files\/2012\/03\/CircleOfCourageWheel-294x300.gif 294w, https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/edst591\/files\/2012\/03\/CircleOfCourageWheel.gif 647w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 363px) 100vw, 363px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Another example is <a href=\"http:\/\/schools.cbe.ab.ca\/b334\/showcase\/circleofcourage\/index.htm\">Lake Bonavista Elementary School <\/a>, which is located in the southeast quadrant of the Bonavista community in Calgary, Alberta. This school adopts Circle of Courage as a framework for their teaching, learning, and living.
