For Remembrance day, I decided to teach a lesson on peace.
I began by asking the class what peace means to them and I wrote the definitions on the board. This allowed them to see the words visually and helped those who may be visual learners absorb the material better.
Afterwards, I read the book “Paulie Pastrami brings world peace” to the class. The book gave the class ideas for bringing about peace in their communities.
To ensure that all the students understood the lesson that was taught by the book, I asked everyone ways in which they could bring about peace to the world around them. I wrote these suggestions on the board so that the students would have a means of reference during the activity.
As a means of assessment, I provided each child with a worksheet to fill out where they had to write at least 3 ways to help create peace and draw a picture to represent it.
I am aware that everyone in the class is at different learning levels being that it is a grade 1, 2, 3 classroom, so I told the grade 1 students that they could choose one from the board to copy. If the student was struggling to print the sentences, I would instruct them to write shorter ones or to merely focus on drawing the picture and had them explain the picture to me verbally.
Here are some examples of the students’ work!
