My name is Edwin Chen and I am currently an unclassified student at UBC. I have a Bachelor of Commerce from UBC and a Master of Financial Risk Management from SFU. I have been working as a financial engineer for the past five years. I develop financial and mathematical models to to value front office trading books and quantify risks for financial institutions. Our risk solutions ensures financial institutions have enough capital set aside to maintain solvency, so when market condition changes, they have enough cash or liquid assets to cover the loses.
I became more and more interested in computer science in recent years and finally decided to make a career change to the tech industry. I want to make a difference by creating products that change the way people live. I believe being part of the technology innovation best suits my interest and passion.
Although I am at my mid thirties, I feel like if I don’t pursue my dream now, I would always be wondering what would have happened if I did. I do not want to regret in the future because I just let myself be comfortable with my current job. I applied for the Bachelor of Computer Science second degree program at UBC last year, and I am currently waiting for a response. Meanwhile, I am taking a few courses to get a head start of the program.
