{"id":8,"date":"2017-01-05T17:57:39","date_gmt":"2017-01-06T00:57:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/eescourses\/?page_id=8"},"modified":"2017-11-07T18:19:16","modified_gmt":"2017-11-08T01:19:16","slug":"ees-the-ucaubc-course-development-partnership","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/eescourses\/ees-the-ucaubc-course-development-partnership\/","title":{"rendered":"EES: The UCA\/UBC Program Development Partnership"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After a year of discussion, negotiation, budgeting and contract development, UBC\u2019s departments of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eoas.ubc.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">EOAS<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.geog.ubc.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Geography<\/a> are embarking upon a partnership with the <a href=\"http:\/\/ucentralasia.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">University of Central Asia<\/a> (UCA) to develop, produce and transfer the 22 courses making up UCA\u2019s new undergraduate B.Sc. program in Earth and Environmental Sciences (<a href=\"http:\/\/ucentralasia.org\/Admissions\/EarthAndEnvironment\">EES<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>UCA is a <span class=\"s1\">secular, internationally chartered and not-for-profit University, being developed as a partnership between the governments of Kazakhstan, the Kyrgyz Republic and Tajikistan and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.akdn.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Aga Khan Development Network<\/a> (AKDN)<\/span>. UCA\u2019s Chancellor, His Highness the Aga Khan, signed the International Treaty and Charter establishing this University in 2000, bringing the commitment and experience of the broader AKDN to the partnership, and offering an internationally recognized standard of higher education in Central Asia.<\/p>\n<p>The university will include three campuses, one in each country. The first, in Naryn, Kyrgyz Republic, was opened for teaching in Sept. 2016. Some details about this new campus can eb seen <a href=\"http:\/\/ucentralasia.org\/Resources\/Item\/1247\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aecom.com\/press\/university-of-central-asia-campus-opens\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>. It will focus on the <strong>Computer Science<\/strong> and <strong>Communications \/ Media<\/strong> programs. The Khorog, Tajikistan campus (opening 2017) will focus on the <strong>Economics<\/strong> and <strong>Earth and Environmental Science<\/strong> programs, and the Tekeli, Kazakhstan campus (opening 2019) will focus on the <strong>Engineering Sciences<\/strong> and <strong>Business and Management<\/strong> programs.<\/p>\n<p>Our role at UBC is to prepare the courses for the EES degree program, and support corresponding professional development for the UCA faculty who will be teaching them. This project begins in January 2017 and involves delivering 3 pre-requisite courses in chemistry and ecology by late spring 2018, then a year later delivering 19 required and elective courses equally distributed among the environmental and geoscience disciplines. This work is being carried out in close partnership with current UCA faculty and members of <a href=\"http:\/\/ucentralasia.org\/Research\">research groups affiliated with UCA<\/a>.
