{"id":359,"date":"2018-01-26T18:14:35","date_gmt":"2018-01-27T01:14:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/eescourses\/?p=359"},"modified":"2018-02-20T11:21:44","modified_gmt":"2018-02-20T18:21:44","slug":"february-2018-update","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/eescourses\/2018\/01\/26\/february-2018-update\/","title":{"rendered":"February 2018 update"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Progress summary:<\/span><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>3 Prerequisite courses<\/strong> are nearly done.\n<ul>\n<li>Ecology (Biol), Physics, Chemistry, each built by a UBC Science Education Specialist.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>19 Program core courses<\/strong> are in syllabus-design stage. <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/eescourses\/personnel\/\">Personnel<\/a>:\n<ul>\n<li>14 courses being built by 5 in EOAS, Geog. or other UBC dep&#8217;ts;<\/li>\n<li>4 courses being built by 2 with other affiliations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>UCA<\/strong> Curriculum Review Committee begins this month.<\/li>\n<li><strong>UBC team<\/strong> visited Tajikistan, <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/eescourses\/2017\/11\/13\/trip-summary\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">October 2017<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>UBC team<\/strong> will visit again, likely May 2018 and Sept\/Oct 2018.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Details:<\/span><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Funded<\/strong> by UCA &amp; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.akdn.org\/our-agencies\/university-of-central-asia\">AKDN<\/a>; contract between UCA &amp; UBC.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Coordinated<\/strong> at <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/eescourses\/ees-the-ucaubc-course-development-partnership\/\">EOAS and UCA<\/a> in Tajikistan &amp; Kyrgyz Republic.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Three prerequisite courses<\/strong> are well underway:\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Biology<\/strong> (genetics, evolution, ecology): to be taught Sept 2018.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Physics<\/strong>: to be taught January 2019.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Chemistry<\/strong>: to be taught February 2019.<\/li>\n<li>Syllabi currently (Feb 2018) under review with the newly formed UCA prerequisite Curriculum Review Committee.<\/li>\n<li>All thirteen 3-hour lessons, including class, lab, home and assessment work are essentially complete for chemistry and biology.<\/li>\n<li>Physics will be completed by end of April 2018.<\/li>\n<li>Curriculum Review Committee will offer feedback. Any adjustments to be completed by May 2018.<\/li>\n<li>Transfer to UCA instructors in summer 2019.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Nineteen EES program core courses<\/strong> are at the syllabus-design phase.\n<ul>\n<li>Seven course developers are working on 18 of 19 courses.<\/li>\n<li>Team meets weekly.<\/li>\n<li>Developers collaborate on related courses and course sequences.<\/li>\n<li>One developer still needed: <strong>Geodynamics\/structures, or equivalent<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>5 EES courses<\/strong> to be taught starting September 2019.<\/li>\n<li><strong>5 EES courses<\/strong> to be taught starting January 2020.<\/li>\n<li>Students take electives at a different campus, Sept. 2019.<\/li>\n<li><strong>9 EES courses<\/strong> to be taught starting January 2021.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Coming up:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Visits to and from Tajikistan &amp; Kyrkyz Republic<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>UCA faculty and staff will likely visit UBC March 6, 7, 2018.<\/li>\n<li>UBC course developers will likely visit UCA May ~14-31.<\/li>\n<li>Prerequisite instructors will likely visit UBC, summer 2018.<\/li>\n<li>Second UBC visit likely in Sept\/Oct 2018.<\/li>\n<li>New UCA faculty will likely visit UBC, summer 2019.<\/li>\n<li>Third visit is possible for senior courses, summer 2019.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Opportunities<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>EOAS, Geog faculty will hopefully advise on courses, lessons, activities and assessments (See <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/eescourses\/files\/2017\/07\/Faculty-expectations.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">benefits to UBC faculty<\/a>).<\/li>\n<li>Faculty to be approached starting Feb. or Marc.<\/li>\n<li>Potential for Geog, EOAS, IRES, EESG (ubc-o), others to collaborate with new UCA faculty on research with Central Asian context.<\/li>\n<li>Student contributions (depending upon availability and funding): possibly 2 UBC <a href=\"https:\/\/students.ubc.ca\/career\/campus-experiences\/work-learn-program\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">worklearn<\/a> summer students; possible opportunities for UCA students; volunteers (clubs?)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>For more information<\/strong> or to ask about contributing or helping out, please contact project coordinator <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eoas.ubc.ca\/people\/francisjones\">Francis Jones<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Progress summary: 3 Prerequisite courses are nearly done.
