Biography

Hi,

My name is Ethan Fung. I am 21 years old and living in Vancouver, British Columbia where I was born and raised. Currently, I am undergoing a combined honours in biochemistry and chemistry degree at UBC with the goal of becoming a pharmaceutical chemist. To obtain experience in the field I am working as a research assistant in the Perrin lab (UBC Chemistry), funded by an NSERC USRA award.  The lab is interested in using this toxin as a cancer therapy. I am very passionate about organic chemistry, and being able to contribute to the making of deadly toxins makes it even more exciting.

Even though I am heavily invested in academia now, it was not always like this. In fact, for most of my life, I was a basketball player with no regard for anything outside of sports. I have played for various club teams including Team BC where I got to travel and play basketball all around North America. A fun fact I like to tell people was that I guarded Shareef O’Neal the son of Shaquille O’Neal at a tournament in Las Vegas. Sadly, after high school, I could not envision myself making a professional career out of basketball so I decided to come to UBC where I found my passion for organic chemistry. Even though I do not play anymore I still work as a private basketball trainer on the side.

In my free time, I like to play video games, watch anime, and learn different skills. I am currently learning how to code in Javascript.

Thank you for taking the time to read this biography,

Ethan Fung
