What do we mean by transformative learning?\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

Transformative learning<\/b> theory says that the process of “perspective transformation” has three dimensions<\/strong>:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. \n

    psychological (changes in understanding of the self),<\/h3>\n<\/li>\n
  2. \n

    convictional (revision of belief systems),<\/h3>\n<\/li>\n
  3. \n

    and behavioural (changes in lifestyle)<\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Transformative Learning Theory was first articulated by Jack Mezirow of Columbia University.<\/p>\n

    Mezirow argued that transformations<\/em> often follow some variation of the following 10 phases;<\/div>\n
    <\/div>\n
      \n
    1. \n

      A disorienting dilemma<\/strong><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n
    2. \n

      A self examination with feelings<\/strong> of guilt or shame<\/strong><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n
    3. \n

      A critical assessment<\/strong> of epistemic, sociocultural, or psychic assumptions<\/h3>\n<\/li>\n
    4. \n

      Recognition<\/strong> that one\u2019s discontent and the process of transformation are shared and that others have negotiated a similar change<\/h3>\n<\/li>\n
    5. \n

      Exploration<\/strong> of options for new roles, relationships, and actions<\/h3>\n<\/li>\n
    6. \n

      Planning a course of action<\/strong><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n
    7. \n

      Acquisition<\/strong> of knowledge and skills for implementing one\u2019s plan<\/h3>\n<\/li>\n
    8. \n

      Provision trying<\/strong> of new roles<\/h3>\n<\/li>\n
    9. \n

      Building of competence<\/strong> and self-confidence<\/strong> in new roles and relationships<\/h3>\n<\/li>\n
    10. \n

      A reintegration<\/strong> into one\u2019s life on the basis of conditions dictated by one\u2019s perspective<\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
