Las Vegas Attack on Youtube

Posted by in Uncategorized

More then one hundred hours of content per minute is gathered on Youtube. The constant flow of information would make any big corporation like youtube slip up in their operations.

Youtube has provided a platform for the creator to gain a following which, has turned creating youtube videos into a career. However, over time Youtube has had to change their policies to keep up with big advertisers allowing them to continue operating. Some of these content creators are frustrated because the subject matter they cover in their videos goes against the companies new guidelines. The recent mass amount of ads being pulled off of videos has been coined as the “ad-pocalypse”.

On October 8 the Las Vegas tragedy occurred. People from all over the world were voicing their concerns and sending support to the victims of this tragedy. One of those people was Casey Neistat. Casey is a successful Youtuber with 7,985,448 subscribers to his channel and a partner with CNN on a YT news channel. He created a video “LET’S HELP THE VICTIMS OF THE LAS VEGAS ATTACK” which spoke about raising money to help the survivors and victims of the calamity. One of the ways he was planning on raising money was through monetizing his video to allow ads to run with the money from the ads going to charity. The same day Jimmy Kimmel also posted a video covering the Mass Shooting in Las Vegas. Jimmy Kimmel got ads running on his video while Casey Neistat got his ads pulled. The ads on Casey’s video was removed because “policy is to not run ads on videos about tragedies”.

A debated erupted on YT. There was outrage over the unjust policy use and, criticism about whether creators should complain about this unfair treatment? Without Youtube, the creators wouldn’t have a job and following.

When you look through that lens you could also say that the suicide in the Apple factory isn’t something to complain about. Unfair treatment is unfair treatment. If these creators don’t push to what they think is right then YT won’t improve. They need to be held accountable for their actions. The operation is a significant segment of a business. In order to have YT being the front-runner for online video, they need to step up their game and find a better logarithm to base their ads on.
