Characterized by &#8220;dirty wars&#8221; that divided populations and resulted in high death counts, it&#8217;s clear why this period was given its nickname. One of the most interesting parts of the chapter to me was the role of students, especially university students, in social activism in the mid-60s. It made me think about the power students can have in political\/social discussions as it&#8217;s common to see rallies or protests on our campus and likely all campuses in North America. It was harrowing, however, to read the sentiment Dawson offered that &#8220;the revolution [Che Guevara] promised to Latin America played out as a tragedy for a generation of young idealists who stood little chance against the weapons arrayed against them.&#8221; Ultimately, radical students were met with violent responses from the military and conservatives in many countries.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This week focused on the period from the 1960s-90s in LA known as &#8220;The Terror&#8221;.
