The assignment was a hands on way to apply this new knowledge and practice creating our own definitions.

I chose the term “agoraphobia”, as I am a psychology major and Abnormal Psychology (studying psychological disorders) was one of the courses I found most interesting. Agoraphobia is a term that many people might not be familiar with, and therefore a good choice for this assignment.

When I was writing my first draft, there were some sections I was unsure about how to go about, particularly my visual and the strategies I used for expanding. I wasn’t sure if the visual would be clear enough, or if the expanded definition provided enough information. I looked forward to being able to share my draft with a peer and receive feedback that would help me clear up these sections. I also find that after working on assignments for a prolonged period of time, I tend to skim while I’m editing rather than reading through my work properly. I was sure that there would be some grammatical or technical errors that I missed, but was glad to have Andrea’s eyes as a backup before having to submit a final draft. I found Andrea’s suggestions to all be very helpful, and she brought up many points that I would never think of. This really made me appreciate another person’s perspective on my work.

I found that reviewing Andrea’s definitions allowed me to see the strengths in her assignment as suggestions for improving my own. I also found that when noticing her errors, I often had similar ones in my own writing, which made it easier to go back and edit my own (which makes me wonder why we are so willing to see our peer’s faults, yet often blind to our own…). This exercise was a valuable lesson in being able to critique someone’s work while staying polite, and turning those critiques into constructive suggestions to be used to improve the work. This skill of being able to constructively criticise is so important in the professional world, as a team member or a superior, and I am happy I have the opportunity to practice this skill throughout the term.

When I submit my work, I often fail to see the benefit of self-editing, or having someone else take a look. I know that editing is a essential to the writing process, but I often fail to make the time to do so. This often results in a lower grade than I would have received had I had someone take a second look for me. This assignment has re-emphasised the importance of peer reviews and given me first hand experience on how valuable the process can be.

Here is my peer’s review:

Andrea’s Peer Review

Here is my final copy:

ENGL 301 Emilie Grace Three Definitions Final Copy

The definitions assignment for week 3 was a great way to learn about the different types of definitions used in the professional world.
