Welcome to Emily Carr’s Corresponding Letters, a website created by me, for you, to exhibit a selection of letters penned by the celebrated Canadian painter, Emily Carr.

Emily’s artwork is important and inspirational. Yet, not very many people know who Emily was behind the canvas. As a hardworking and fiercely independent artist, the friends she made were those she deeply cared for. One of her closest friends, Nan Cheney donated all of her correspondence with Emily to the University of British Columbia’s Rare Books and Special Collections. I had the chance to research these letters at RBSC and chose three which I think provide an excellent representation of Emily’s personality and work throughout her life.

Through correspondence with Nan Cheney, Charlie Evitt, Winnie Evitt, and Lawren Harris you can read about the adventures, thoughts, and private life of Emily Carr -the famous recluse.
