My name is William and I am a 4th year Sociology Major. Before University I can honestly say I did not even know there was such a field of study as Sociology. During my first year after testing the waters in subjects from Asian studies to English Prose, I decided in focusing on Sociology as my major. I was drawn to Sociology due to how it examined the relations between people and issues of race. I also took part in a few women and gender courses where I can say that these courses left me with new respect and understanding to the difficulties of other groups that I ignored from a hetero perspective. While I have taken the requirements to graduate with a BA I have no plans of going into further education to teach like many of my peers. I am more interested in combining what I have learned from school and applying them to the skills I picked up through sales.
After a visit with my career councilor I might not be so worried about my future, but until then I have no definitive career path. As of now I know that I don’t want to clean dishes or lift heavy boxes, but continue in a field that deals with people where I can get a sense of accomplishment and pride from helping someone. I got that chance when I was able to be hired as a retail sales position where I was able to lend a helping hand and meet different people. People seem to keep pointing for me to enter into government where my degree can ensure me a stable wage with benefits. From my time spent at school I have learned that I am not the academic type and would prefer working to repay my parents.
