Subject: LinkedIn best practices

As requested for assignment 2.2, I have researched tips and practices that would help create the most effective LinkedIn profile. Here are my top findings:

  • Choose a great professional photo – this tip is extremely important due to the fact that a person’s profile picture is the first thing people see when they click on your profile. The photo should then most ideally be catered towards the industry that you are trying to enter.
  • Include a current job entry even when you are unemployed – this tip is important because recruiting professionals use the current position to search for possible candidates which means if left empty you will most likely be missed in most searches.
  • Be part of a LinkedIn group – LinkedIn groups is a great resource because it instantly connects you to people within the industry and shows that you’re engaged in the field that you are pursuing.
  • Remove all buzzwords – when creating a LinkedIn profile, one of the key things to do is to differentiate yourself from other candidates and avoiding buzzwords will help you in that aspect.
  • Edit your URL – by personalizing your URL it would be easier for your name to be searched on search engines such as Google or Bing.
  • Update your status – similar to Facebook, LinkedIn also has a status section where you can strategically post about things within your field to show that you are engaged in the community.
  • Ask for Recommendations – this tip important because written recommendations for employers or co-workers are the most influential piece of content on LinkedIn profiles.
  • Add multimedia to your summary – LinkedIn allows you to add things such as pictures, videos, or slideshows which can all improve your LinkedIn profile.
  • Add projects, Volunteering experiences, or languages – additional skills on your LinkedIn profile will allow you to stand out against other competitors.
  • Don’t waste summary space – your summary is extremely important as it summarizes your key skills, past work experiences, and passions

I hope that these suggestions were helpful in creating or improving your LinkedIn profile. Please let know if you have any questions or concerns.
