From: Yury Zhuk, (ENGL 301 Student)
Date: Nov. 16, 19
Subject: Progress Report on the Formal Report Assignment

Dear Dr. Paterson,

This is a brief update about the progress of the Formal Report assignment thus far.

Report Audience

This report is intended for the Statistics Faculty at UBC. Lecturers will be able to benefit from guidance provided in this report to improve their lectures when Lecture Capture Systems are introduced. These improvements will likely yield increased student participation, satisfaction, and performance.

Report Purpose

The purpose of this report is to recommend changes Statistics-course lectures, in order to maximize student participation, performance, and satisfaction, by suggesting the most effective ways of using new lecture recording technology.

Report Significance

There are many ways in which lecture capture systems will impact teaching and learning in the Statistics department at UBC. Examples of benefits include the ability for students to revisit content they did not understand, improved access for students with temporary illnesses or disabilities, and better support for individual learning styles. Risks may include reduced student attendance, privacy concerns, and under-utilization of the systems.

Research Plan

  • General Research:
    • Ways of delivering lectures that have been tested at UBC (e.g. reverse classroom model at the department of Computer Science);
    • How these methods of lecture delivery have impacted student participation, student performance, and student satisfaction
    • How a course’s structure impacts the effectiveness of the systems, and which types of courses benefit from the system the most
    • What changes can be made to courses to best-utilize the systems
    • Will there be an extra burden on lecturers in providing access to the recorded content, and how can this be reduced?
    • How often recordings need to be updated to ensure they are up-to-date
  • Data Aggregation:
    • Solicit survey responses from Statistics and Computer Science students at UBC
    • Reaching out to Shaun Filwok and others for interviews
    • Analyze, visualize and extract insights from survey data
