Subject: Review of parenthetical, sentence and expanded definition of Deductible

The definitions for “deductible” are well-organized and clarify any common misconceptions associated with the term.  This report outlines a few suggestions for the polished version.

Initial Impressions

The parenthetical and sentence definition are both excellent. The parenthetical definition is succinct, while the sentence definition fleshes out the term. The example of patients and PharmaCare solidified the practical context. However, there were a few issues with the expanded definition. Namely, there seems to be some confusion on the purpose of the expanded definition.

Purpose and Organization

In the expanded definition, there was an emphasis on the example of the term deductible in relation to patients and PharmaCare. That is, it seemed practical in nature, rather than specifically adhering to the term deductible. In the textbook, expanded definitions typically consist of a few different methods to clarify the term (ie. examples, history, origin of the word, analysis of parts, visuals, and so on). For example, rather than questions addressing concerns about PharmaCare, they should center on the nature of the definition deductible.

For the final copy, revise the expanded definition. Potential suggestions are adding the history of the word deductible, or etymology.

Audience

The definitions were well-written for the audience in question. They provided a very clear overview of common concerns that the intended audience might have.

As for potential jargon, though “amount to be borne by the insured” is short and sweet, it could still be refined. “Amount borne” may be a point of confusion for someone who is uneducated in business and finance, since “borne” is not necessarily a clearly indicative action. “Borne” in the literal sense means “to be carried.” Though the implication of what that means in this context is inferred, it could still be further simplified.

Grammar

  • The patient has reached the deductible however the prescribed medication is not an eligible medication covered by the plan of PharmaCare.
    • Typically, the word however is accompanied by a comma when used in this context.

Style

  • The definitions are well-designed for maximum readability
  • The visual captures how BC Pharma works for those who are not familiar with financial terminology
  • The subheadings make the topic friendly and approachable (ie. Why I was covered last year but not this year? How does it work?).
