Subject: Submission of Research Proposal
Please note that I have submitted a research proposal for the ENG 301 formal report. It can be accessed under the team blog page for ‘Connect4’ and is also enclosed within this memo.
The purpose of this proposal is to find a feasible solution for going paperless for midterms and finals in CPSC 121. Paperless exams provide several benefits, including autograding and reduced paper waste. However, for courses with symbolic components (ie. discrete math), a unique set of challenges arise with going paperless. I will survey and interview students and professors in the CPSC 121 course to finalize a proposed solution to balance the various benefits and concerns.
My research proposal includes:
- Introduction
- Audience – CPSC Department and Professors, including CPSC 121 course staff
- Statement of Problem – Difficulty balancing benefits and drawbacks of paperless midterms in discrete math courses
- Proposed Solution – Redesigning midterm problems to be optimized for online midterms, and providing students with optional scratch-work submissions for part marks
- Scope – student concerns and perspectives, as well as staff insight and long-term goals
- Method – Survey to the CPSC 121 student discord and interview with CPSC 121 professor Dr. Karina Mochetti
- Qualifications – student of CPSC 121, and experience in both paper-based and online-based discrete math midterms
- Conclusion
I look forward to hearing your feedback for my proposal.
