Subject: Proposal for Determining the Feasibility of a Hybrid Work model
Introduction
Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, many companies were forced to shift to a hybrid-remote work model. Tools such as Zoom were introduced and became popular due to the ease of collaboration and convenience without having to leave home. Moreover, individuals were able to save and spend more time with their family due to not having to commute. Since the start of the pandemic, many individuals have had the luxury of being able to work from home while reaping the benefits it presents.
With the pandemic coming to an end, companies have begun the process of transitioning back to the office. Individuals who once had more time for their friends and family, are now losing that time to commuting. Individuals who once had the flexibility to work at home, are now being forced to come back to the office.
I believe by continuing a hybrid-work model into the workplace, this will allow individuals the ability to choose if they would like to go into the office or stay at home. Both options have their own pros and cons, which are left to the individual to decide.
My manager, Logan Doe, at Jasper will be the reader for the formal report.
Statement of Problem
From the start of the pandemic, Jasper has allowed individuals to choose to work from home or go into the office. With the pandemic winding down, Jasper is asking its current employees to come into the office fully, with no option of remote. Many employees have voiced their concern over the time and flexibility they will lose if they were to go back in. On the other hand, other employees have voiced their support in going back to the office due to more socialization and structure. The major problem here is that both sides disagree on each other’s desired work model.
Proposed Solution
One possible solution to the problem is to continue to have a hybrid-work model in place for employees to choose from themselves. This solution will provide employees with a choice to either work from home, or work from the office. By providing the choice to the employee, it allows them to reap whatever benefit they may have in the setting they prefer.
Scope
To assess the feasibility of a hybrid-work model, I plan to pursue five areas of inquiry:
- What are some of the positives and negatives of your style of working?
- Why are you against or for working remote?
- What challenges do you face or do employers face when work is hybrid?
- What are the time savings spent working remotely, compared to working in the office?
- What can be done to further improve your working situation?
Methods
My primary data sources will include a survey/questionnaire with the five questions stated above. I would provide the survey to employees throughout the company. In addition, I will discuss with fellow co-workers their opinions on different work models, and probe their reasoning depper.
My secondary sources will come from peer-reviewed journals, and research articles revolving around remote, in-office and hybrid-work models.
My Qualifications
I have a Bachelors of Science in Public Health, and have worked as a Software Engineer for several months. Currently, I am a fourth-year BCS student at the University of British Columbia, and a student of English 301. Having worked in a hybrid model before in different roles, I believe I will have the tools and knowledge to be able to solve this problem. I am aware of the pros and cons both options may bring.
Conclusion
Having a hybrid-work model will allow individuals to choose whether they want to go into work, or work remotely. Each option allows the individual to reap the benefits of whatever option they choose. Through this research and formal report, I hope to uncover the feasibility behind a hybrid-work model. With your approval, I will aim to begin this research right away.
