Subject: 301 Progress Report: Feasibility Analysis of the Implementation of a Diversified Menu at Lynn Valley Care Centre

Purpose and Significance of Report

The purpose of this report is to provide recommendations for the diversification of the food service menu at Lynn Valley Care Centre through the inclusion of client preferences, culturally-relevant food practices, and the utilization of local ingredients, in order to improve client quality of life.

Lynn Valley Care Centre Director of Care Betty Wills

Report Objectives

The objectives of this report are:

  • To determine the extent that food preferences influence food insecurity and client quality of life
  • To confirm the feasibility of switching from current food practices to culturally-relevant, local, and preference-based practices
  • To provide recommendations on increasing nutrient profiles of menu items and meals
Methods:

Primary data collection via an online survey targeted to Lynn Valley Care Centre clients. Attached is the link to the survey questions being used to gather data for this report:

Secondary sources will include researching culturally-relevant food practices, distribution of local ingredients in Metro Vancouver, and best long-term care nutrition practices.

Research Plan
In order to analyze feasibility and provide effective recommendations, I plan to:
  • Assess the personal and cultural preferences of clientele
  • Critically analyze the nutrient profile of current Nutrition Care Plans and menus
  • Identify the impact of menu preferences on client quality of life and food security
  • Find distributors of locally sourced goods
  • Analyze primary data from surveys
  • Produce visuals based on survey data
  • Identify culturally-appropriate meals and food practices
  • Evaluate the implementation strategy for preference-based menus in long-term care
