Subject: A Proposal to Eliminate Littering on UBC Campus

Audience Description

This proposal is written for all members in UBC Vancouver campus and Campus Service department.

Introduction

As a group member of UBC Vancouver campus, rubbish dumping on campus is always a major concern. It is not just creating unscenic problems, but also causing serious environmental problems on campus natures.

Especially outside of university buildings, dumping is significant on the road and grass. This is not for one’s responsibility, all UBC members should have consciousness of the dumped rubbish problem.

Statement of Problem

Taking action is needed to keep UBC Vancouver campus’s beautiful nature. There are two major reasons that lead to this problem: first, there are not enough rubbish bins on the campus roads in comparison to inside of buildings. Second, a clear prohibition sign for dumping rubbish is required on campus roads and grass fields.

Proposed Solution

One possible solution to this problem is increasing rubbish bins and Do-Not-Dumping signs on required campus places. These could awaken the necessity of non-dumping rubbish on campus roads and grass fields, and also increase the probability of non-dumping.

Scope

To assess the feasibility of reducing dumping rubbishes on campus, I plan to pursue six areas of inquiry:

  1. What do people think about the main reason for dumping rubbish on campus?
  2. How many rubbish bins and prohibition dumping signs are outside of buildings on campus?
  3. How far is the distance between rubbish bins outside of buildings?
  4. How are other universities doing?
  5. How could we select the locations for rubbish bins if we put them more?
  6. How much is the expected budget for increasing bins and signs?

Methods

My primary data sources will include the survey of UBC members including students, staves, and professors. Surveys can help to identify and broaden the approach to solution. Also I can observe how many bins and signs are on campus by walking around the campus.

Secondary sources will include the paper of the research for university rubbish problem and other universities’ situations.

My Qualifications

As a student of UBC, I am experiencing the lack of rubbish bins. Also I worked at the department of Student Service in my previous university, I have an experience with this type of improving environment research for every term. This could be helpful to do my research.

Conclusion

UBC has a wonderful nature, there is no doubt. But simultaneously, people who are using that have a responsibility to keep and improve. This will make a better and continuous environment for the school natures.
