MEMORANDUM

From: Duffy Du, Student ENGL 301 Technical Writing UBC

Date: Feb 27, 2022

Subject: 301 Progress Report – Small-wheeled Vehicle Lanes on Main Roads of UBC

Dear Dr. Paterson,

I have completed the formal report outline and this memo serves as a progress report on my proposal of small-wheeled vehicle lanes on main roads of UBC.

Purpose and Significance of Report

The purpose of this report is to survey opinions of UBC staff and students and provide recommendations for implementing separate lanes specifically for small-wheeled vehicles on the major roads of UBC. These additional lanes will not only improve the experiences of students using small-wheeled vehicles for travelling between classes, but also increase the sense of safety for pedestrians and drivers as they have their own separate lanes.

Audience for your report:

UBC Facilities: Infrastructure Development

John Metras – Associative Vice-President, Facilities

Catherine Alkenbrack – Director, Facilities Planning

Report Objectives

The objectives of this report are:

  • To determine the prevalence of small-wheeled vehicle use on campus
  • To gather opinions on the current state of road conditions, road share situation and the addition of small-wheeled vehicle lanes on major roads of UBC
  • To explore the feasibility of planning and implementing these lanes
  • To provide recommendation in terms of lane design and choice of locations

Methods:

Primary data collection via an online survey targeted to the staff and students of UBC. The attached is a link to the survey questions used for data collection for this report:

Research plan:

In order to gather UBC staff and students’ opinions and provide recommendations for implementation strategies, I plan to:

  • Identify the current road conditions and road sharing situation on the main roads of UBC campus
  • Create a survey to gather public opinions on the current road conditions on campus and the addition of separate small-wheeled vehicle lanes
  • Distribute the survey to UBC staff and students to gather responses
  • Research and reference bike lane implementation strategies and design
  • Data analysis and data visualization on response from surveys
  • Produce a final formal report on this project
