Subject: Research Report Progress – Improving the Quality and Accessibility of Financial Literacy Resources Available to UBC Students

Purpose and Significance of Report

This report will provide a valuable assessment of the quality of AMS and UBC financial literacy resources, and efficient recommendations for improving the quality of such resources. With stronger and more modern finanical literacy resources, UBC students can be better equipped to manage their own money, and more comfortable with their financial futures.

Audience for the Report

Maria Manella – Manager, Student Financial Management, UBC Student Services

Cole Evans – President, UBC AMS

Report Objectives

The primary objectives of this report are as follows:

  • To compile a directory of all existing UBC and AMS financial literacy resources
  • To evaluate if these existing resources are adequately accessible to students
  • To determine how well these resources explain the modern set of financial products
  • To suggest (if necessary) changes to improve the quality and accessibility of UBC and AMS financial literacy resources

Methods

  1. Secondary data will be collected from UBC and AMS websites, and other sources.
  2. Primary data will be collected from a survey of undergraduate students. Attached is a link to a draft of this survey, pending approval.

Research Plan

To determine the quality of existing financial literacy resources, and develop a set of relevant recommendations, I plan to:

  • Review all of the existing UBC & AMS financial literacy resources
  • Research secondary sources to generate an “ideal specification” of financial literacy
  • Compare existing resources to the ideal specification
  • Survey undergraduate students about their own financial literacy
  • Perform data analysis on survey results
  • Produce graphics/visuals from survey data
  • Provide recommendations that cater to the needs of students
