Subject: Proposal for Determining the Feasibility of a Fully-Remote Work model

Introduction

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, many companies were forced to shift to a remote work model. Tools such as Zoom were introduced and became popular due to the ease of collaboration and convenience without having to leave home. Moreover, individuals were able to save and spend more time with their family due to not having to commute. Since the start of the pandemic, many individuals have had the luxury of being able to work from home while reaping the benefits it presents.

However, many companies have begun the process of transitioning back to the office. Individuals who once had more time for their friends and family, are now losing that time to commuting. Individuals who once had the flexibility to work at home, are now being forced to come back to the office.

I believe by continuing a fully-remote work model into the workplace, this will give individuals the flexibility and satisfaction to work from wherever.

My manager, Logan Doe, at Jasper will be the reader for the formal report.

Statement of Problem

Jasper is a healthcare start-up that streamlines the entire healthcare payments journey from copay to collections to help patients afford care, while improving providers’ case acceptance, collections and patient satisfaction.

From the start of the pandemic, Jasper has allowed individuals to choose to work from home or go into the office. With the pandemic winding down, Jasper is asking its current employees to come into the office fully, with no option of remote. Many employees have voiced their concern over the time and flexibility they will lose if they were to go back in. On the other hand, the company and its higher-up’s want to return to the office. The major problem here is that both sides disagree on each other’s desired work model.

Proposed Solution

One possible solution to the problem is to continue to have a fully remote-work model in place. I believe by providing the research, and the data collected from analysis, it would be more than enough to convince the higher-ups at Jasper. By providing a fully-remote work model, it allows employees to reap the benefits they once had when they were working in a remote model.

Scope

To assess the feasibility of a hybrid-work model, I plan to pursue five areas of inquiry:

  1. What are some of the positives and negatives of your style of working?
  2. Why are you against or for working remote?
  3. What challenges do you face or do employers face when work is remote or in person?
  4. What are the time savings spent working remotely, compared to working in the office?
  5. What can be done to further improve your working situation?

Methods

My primary data sources will include a survey/questionnaire with the five questions stated above. I would provide the survey to employees throughout the company. In addition, I will discuss with fellow co-workers their opinions on different work models, and probe their reasoning deeper.

My secondary sources will come from peer-reviewed journals, and research articles revolving around remote, in-office and hybrid-work models.

My Qualifications

I have a Bachelors of Science in Public Health, and have worked as a Software Engineer for several months. Currently, I am a fourth-year BCS student at the University of British Columbia, and a student of English 301. Having worked in a hybrid model before in different roles, I believe I will have the tools and knowledge to be able to solve this problem. I am aware of the pros and cons both options may bring.

Conclusion

Having a remote-work model will allow individuals to reap the benefits it comes with. Through this research and formal report, I hope to uncover the feasibility behind a remote-work model and will compare it to other models. With your approval, I will aim to begin this research right away.
