SUBJECT: Emailing Professors Regarding Course Requests

Dear Evan,

Here is the memo you requested for advice on how to email your professor about full courses. The following tips can help create an effective request.

Best practices when emailing professors:

  • Including a subject line
  • Greeting the recipient formally, for example “Dear Dr. Lambert”
  • Beginning with a short, friendly introduction, such as “I am contacting you as I am very interested in taking one of your courses in order to complete my degree this semester.”
  • Stating the issue concisely and specifically, such as “I have been unable to register for ENGL333, as it is at capacity.”
  • Making the request respectfully and succinctly. “If it is possible, I would appreciate the opportunity to be added to the class list.”
  • Including a short thank you line and closing phrase, such as “Thank you for taking the time to consider my request. Sincerely,  [signature]”
  • Signing one’s full name and providing contact info such as email and phone
  • Avoiding post-scripts and personal plans

Good student-professor communication is vital.  The above tips can help keep email requests clear and concise.  If you have any further questions, please email me at jworsham@student.bc.ca .

Sincerely,

Jen Worsham
